Origin Of The Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19)

I've been gathering my facts throughout the week for this post to make sure all the information here are correct and current. I hope you find this post useful and educative.

The coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) is no news anymore as virtually all countries around the world have had cases of people infected by the virus. Although its quite bizarre that some people still don't know where and how the Corona Virus Pandemic started besides the fact that it originated from China and you can prevent getting infected by using nose masks and gloves.

Covid-19 (Coronavirus diseases 19) was named by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) and the virus was named SARS-CoV-2 because of its similarity to the severe acute respiratory syndrome virus that plagued in China some years ago. Covid-19 is a highly transmittable and pathogenic viral infection that originated from Wuhan, China and has unfortunately spread like a wild fire all around the world. A novel virus of the coronavirus known as Wuhan Coronavirus killed more than 1800 people's and infected over 70,000 in just 55 days of its outbreak. This virus was found to be a member of the β group of coronaviruses and it was named 2019 Wuhan coronavirus (2019-nCov) by the Chinese researchers.

Analysis have shown that SARS-CoV-2 is phylogenetically related to severe acute respiratory syndrome-like (SARS-like) bat viruses and therefore it could be concluded that bats are the possible primary reservoir of the virus. Initially, the virus couldn't be transferred to humans, but its been confirmed that Chinese researchers isolated a strain that could be transferred from bats to rodents, then monkeys and finally humans. Hence, the outbreak of the disease is as a result of the successful and rapid transfer of the virus via human to human without the intervention of bats which are the primary hosts.

"By the end of 2019, WHO was informed by the Chinese government about several cases of pneumonia with unfamiliar etiology. The outbreak was initiated from the Hunan seafood market in Wuhan city of China and rapidly infected more than 50 peoples. The live animals are frequently sold at the Hunan seafood market such as bats, frogs, snakes, birds, marmots and rabbits . On 12 January 2020, the National Health Commission of China released further details about the epidemic, suggested viral pneumonia. From the sequence-based analysis of isolates from the patients, the virus was identified as a novel coronavirus. Moreover, the genetic sequence was also provided for the diagnosis of viral infection. Initially, it was suggested that the patients infected with Wuhan coronavirus induced pneumonia in China may have visited the seafood market where live animals were sold or may have used infected animals or birds as a source of food. However, further investigations revealed that some individuals contracted the infection even with no record of visiting the seafood market. These observations indicated a human to the human spreading capability of this virus, which was subsequently reported in more than 100 countries in the world. The human to the human spreading of the virus occurs due to close contact with an infected person, exposed to coughing, sneezing, respiratory droplets or aerosols. These aerosols can penetrate the human body (lungs) via inhalation through the nose or mouth"

Till date, there is no clinically approved antiviral drug or vaccine available to combat COVID-19. Although, combinations of a broad-spectrum of antiviral drugs have been evaluated against COVID-19 in clinical trials which has resulted in recovery of some patients.

The best ways of preventing the spread of the disease is by staying away from crowded places, washing and disinfecting of our hands regularly, using a nose masks to prevent letting the virus out for those that are infected.
