Pileated Woodpecker
The largest North American Woodpecker1

Yesterday afternoon I looked out the window and noticed a big dark form in the top of one of the chokecherry bushes. As I looked closer I found it to be a giant woodpecker, the Pileated Woodpecker. I have not seen very many of these birds around the farm but I tend to hear them as they knock the wood of the trees up on our hill. This one though was right down near the house so I finally got a got picture of the about 16 inch tall bird.
(1) - The Ivory Billed Woodpecker was the largest in North America but it is likely extinct. Source

I've seen those giant wood peckers on our property also. Didn't know what they were called though!
