Woke carves itself a new linguistic niche.

"Woke" has replaced "SJW" as the term of disparagement du jour for anyone who thinks bigotry is a bad thing and would like to get rid of it, but that's extra ironic and horrible because "woke" originally referred to black people reckoning with the racist oppression against them.

So if you're anti-"woke," you are actually saying that you oppose black people becoming aware of and defending themselves against racism.

You're also heavily implying that you would've sneeringly referred to the Freedom Riders in 1961 as "wokistas."

"No, I'm referring to WHITE social justicey people!"

A significant number of the Freedom Riders were white. Do you mean to say that nobody can or should advocate for an oppressed group but the oppressed group themselves? Has that EVER been successful, let alone conscionable?

"But I literally heard a 'woke' person say that 'anti-racist' means you hate white people, and hating white people is good!"

So what? Does that person suddenly represent the entirety of anti-racists? Who made them the official scribe of the movement?

"But they're all just playing the race card, and that makes THEM the REAL racists!"

Go away. Just...go away.

There is, by the way, no finish line. No 100% opponent of bigotry, no perfect SJW.

We're all just trying, or not trying, to be better. When we try and fail, or when we don't try at all, we shouldn't blame someone for recognizing that. We shouldn't say "Screw this whole thing, then" and walk off and join the IDW or the alt-right. That's a childish, petulant behavior. They are childish, petulant people.

If you honestly care about being a better person, you'll acknowledge the criticism and keep trying.

Suggestion: Don't worry about whether you're "woke" at all. Do your best to oppose bigotry where you find it. And if somebody says you said or did something that reflects bigotry, listen and evaluate whether their observation has merit, and then change your ways if it does.

It's meaningless to complain that "the woke tribe" demands anything at all, because it's not a tribe. Individual people may demand things, but they don't speak for "the woke folks" any more than anybody else.
