Steem4nigeria Accelerator Contest Week 102:That True Saying
I hear people say most times that there is no aspect in life in which a proverb doesn't apply. I feel that proverbs are extremely essential for our day to day living.
The book of Proverbs alone has every knowledge you might possibly need to live life the right way.
I've heard of a bunch of adages and proverbs before... but I will use just a few to answer the questions below.
What is that/those Proverbs or adages you believe to be true and how did you get to hear or know about it.
"ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD"
This is a popular adage that has been told for a real long time and I actually believe in it.
I heard it in a mall one time.. I went shopping with my mom.. I was just a little child then. There were so many shiny and beautiful things that I was seeing and they were so inviting.
Shoes, sweets, bags, so many things that looked amazing.
I kept pulling my mom towards the products while my mom kept pulling me away.
It was getting really frustrating and I was pulling tantrums and stunts to see if she would just get me something.
When we were already at the point where we would check out... I pulled free from my mother's grip and ran to grab bag of sweets..
"I want this" I said
"Drop it... all that glitters is not gold" I didn't allow it to really register because I was just a kid and something else caught my attention. But later on as I grew older I had a rethink about it.
"BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY"
This is another popular adage I strongly believe in. It's just an adage that can also be put this way: *"Prevention is better than cure" Meaning that it is better to do your best and avoid something disastrous from happening than fo start looking for a solution when the damage has already been done.
The time I heard this was during the COVID-19 pandemic... safety precautions everywhere... wash your hands, social distancing, And the whole bunch of them. The one that really pisses me off was that of wearing masks... they are so uncomfortable and I literally hate putting them on.. they were so uncomfortable.
It was one day we wanted to step out a bit... I intentionally left my mask and thought no one would notice... but my mom said I should go and get it.
"Ah these masks again... not like the virus is just across the street" I said
My Dad heard it and said "Better safe than sorry" I just fashed it and wore my mask.
"PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT"
This is another proverb that I love so much... it's very simple to understand... Just keep on doing something and before you know it you're getting the hang of it. I heard it from my mom when I tried cooking noodles for the first time... I was pretty young then...
I had always watched her cook and I had never tried because I felt I didn't want to mess up and waste the ingredients... so I'd usually shy away from cooking... so one day I tried cooking it and it was a total disaster.... i still ate it anyways... my mom just smiled and said... "Practice makes perfect" I laughed because I knew it'll be a while before I make up my mind to do that again.
Why do you believe that saying is true? Do you know of or have any experience that confirms this proverb or adage
For the first Adage I mentioned which is all that glitters is not gold... I believe it is true because things that look flashy and enticing might not actually be as simple as it seems.
I experienced that firsthand.
When I was in Junior high... I admired those in senior secondary school... I mean the cool uniforms... the flashy bags the superior air of authority the exuded I couldn't wait... most times I would have sleepless nights thinking of how I would act so cool once I became a senior and was probably made a prefect.
Well, that was it until I entered... it was one hell of reality slapping my face.
The endless subjects... the endless notes.. the endless projects and assignments... the practicals... the voluminous textbooks, it wasn't an wash reality to accept but I somehow got around it. But it taught me that truly "All that glitters is not gold"
For the second proverb I used in the first question which is Better safe than sorry...
I believe it because like I said to prevent something is better than finding a cure after the deed has been done.
I never believed I could catch a cold... or even get sick during a cold weather... Mostly at nights when the breeze is usually the strongest I never slept covering my self properly.
I felt so uncomfortable wearing sweaters... long sleeves... trousers to sleep... I'd just go for something very light and whole everybody was getting a cold, I never did.
My Dad would always say I should wear socks and the rest of them but I never listened.
Until just a few months ago during this extreme rain we've been having in my country... That cold was terrible... I was literally shivering even after putting on layers of clothes... for the first time I covered myself properly to Bed.. catarrh and cough were my best friends... I literally thought I was gonna die... well I'm glad I recovered but I'm not making that mistake again.
For the third one I talked about... Practice makes perfect. I don't know how to draw... I didn't fancy it at all but I loved seeing people draw.. most times for my projects at school someone draws if for me because whenever I try... it's terrible.
But I decided to do something... It was a Biology project and we were asked to draw a tooth. I decided I would draw it myself.
I tried and tried but what i was drawing looked nothing like a Tooth... I took a break and continued... it took me 6 hours to perfect drawing it and now I can do so anytime
Do you think the relevance of this proverb will be preserved in the next few generations to come
Surely... All that glitters is not gold will be preserved because in the Future and even now AI is prevalent... it paints certain things to look so attractive and beautiful but is actually a trap when you look at it carefully
Better safe than sorry will be used because even in the future most people jump into conclusions without considering the consequences.
Practice makes perfect is for everyone and there is no one that hasn't tried it... from trying to recite your alphabets as a kid till so many other things it is important to practice.
Thank you all for going through my post... I invite @alli001 @bessie2023 and @emishael60 to participate.

Saludos cordiales y exito.
