Sunlight damages the skin for hours after beach
Sunlight continues to damage the skin and increase the risk of cancer even a few hours after you've left the beach and located indoors. This according to a study by scientists from the University of Yale, cited by the BBC.
When UV radiation attacks the cells of the skin, it can cause mutation in the DNA. Melanin - the pigment responsible for natural complexion or tanned skin - protects the body by absorbing radiation.
What scientists did not know until now, however, it is what actually happens with all that energy absorbed by the melanin. It turns out that it triggers a series of chemical reactions. Eventually released.
"Something similar happens in fireflies that use energy to produce light to shine," said Professor Douglas flour.
During laboratory tests it became clear that the skin continues to suffer damage even four hours after exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
"Half, if not more, than the damage to the skin is not plotted on the beach and in the car or at home," says Prof. Flour.
The team hopes to develop a sunscreen that combines standard protection against radiation while absorbs the energy of melanin.
