Video games that took an unexpected turn in gameplay

in INVEN Gaming4 years ago

There are many video games that become famous over time, this helps motivate the development team to launch one or more sequels, respecting in some way the gameplay and argument of the previous one, however, it can be the case that the developer for some reason gives an unexpected change to the game, either in the gameplay or history.

This can be a very risky change because there is already a community behind such a game that is used to the gameplay that all the prequels have had, it can be the case that everything goes wrong and the franchise is forgotten, but sometimes this change makes it become something incredible.

Currently we can mention several video games that have gone through the above, totally unexpected and risky changes that in the end were very well received by the gamer community. Below, you will see a small list of titles that fit this profile very well.

Crash Team Racing

In 1996 the development team called Naughty Dog would release one of the best games of the 3D era, which they called Crash Bandicoot for the first PlayStation. This had 3 sequels that belonged to the platform genre which retained its playability, improving certain aspects in each delivery.

However, the PlayStation needed some karting game to compete against the famous Mario kart 64, so Naughty Dog's team gave an unexpected twist to the Crash Bandicoot formula, grouping all the characters into one racing game, giving birth to Crash Team Racing, becoming a complete success.

Resident Evil 7

Resident Evil was once a benchmark Survival Horror thanks to its first 3 deliveries, but when Resident Evil 4 was launched the franchise started to take a different direction. Its fifth and sixth installments were action games where terror was relegated to the background, falling into one of the darkest times for fans.

In January 2017 Capcom would turn its franchise upside down with Resident Evil 7, a game that, at the time of its launch, received a lot of criticism, both good and bad. However, once the player entered their world, they could feel one of the most chilling experiences regarding survival horror, but from a first-person perspective.

God of War (2018)

The God of War saga on PlayStation 2 and 3 consoles was characterized by being video games with a camera that always looked at the main character from a distant perspective, being able to observe a complete panorama in most levels, but something would change in an unexpected way in its fourth installment, something that nobody would expect.

When a gameplay of the new God of War for PlayStation 4 was shown everyone was surprised by one particular feature, now the camera would always be on Kratos' shoulder. According to its programmers, this closeness to the character allowed for a better experience in terms of the action and scenes of the game. It seems that they were right because players loved this small, but at the same time big change.

These were some videogames that suddenly changed their theme or way of playing with respect to their predecessors, if you have any other game in mind that might belong to this small list you can indicate it in the comments section.
