What's up, Steemians? Today I want to talk to you about a band that is very important to me.

Toto is an American band from the 80s that fuses rock with blues, jazz, pop, funk, and others. You probably can't associate them by name, but this is a band that became famous thanks to songs like Africa, Rosanna and Hold The Line.

This band is important to me because it brings back great memories. Since 2009 I was in different rock bands, where we played covers of Dream Theater, Foo Fighters, The Beatles, etc; but the last one I was in, was a project where we were doing tribute to Toto.

I was fortunate to be on this great project with my sister. We were both vocalists in the band and it was great to sing those amazing Toto songs with her.

It was just an unforgettable experience! We performed at different clubs in Caracas, like Discovery Bar and the Trasnocho Lounge, Paseo Las Mercedes.

Toto was formed in 1977 by:

  • David Paich: pianist and vocalist.
  • Bobby Kimball: Lead singer.
  • Steve Lukather: Guitarist and vocalist.
  • Jeff Porcaro: Drummer.
  • Steve Porcaro: Keyboarder.
  • David Hungate: Bassist.

But currently the band is formed by the following members:

  • Steve Lukather: Guitarist, vocalist.
  • David Paich: Pianist, vocalist.
  • Shannon Forrest: Drummer.
  • Steve Porcaro: Keyboard player, synthesizer, vocalist.
  • Joseph Williams: Lead vocalist

Before Toto, they were session musicians, hired by different artists, including Michael Jackson, to play the best-selling and best-loved album in history, Thriller.

At first, the band had no name, Steve Lukather, had thought of the name "Ripe Jack", but they rejected it because they thought it was too aggressive. Then Bobby Kimball thought that the band should be called "Toto", because during the recordings of their first album, Jeff Porcaro identified the tapes with these symbols "+0+0" that he later interpreted as Toto, they voted and the name won because it was short and easy to remember.

In many interviews they had, they commented that the name came from the Latin "totus" which means "everything", a perfect name to represent the band, because they make many genre fusions.

In 1983, the band won 6 Grammy awards on the album "Toto IV", which features the songs Africa and Rosanna.

They have recorded a total of 14 albums, sold more than 40 million albums, and are close to their 40th anniversary.

The last album they recorded is called "Toto XIV" which you can listen to here: Spotify-

.

Today Steve Lukather describes the band as "the most misunderstood in the world", because they had strong negative reviews for the name, the appearance of the members and the mix of different musical genres. But musicians like Steve Vai and Eddie Van Halen think this band has the best musicians in history because they created their own unique sound.

Here are 3 videos of their famous songs:

1. Hold The Line:

This song was their first single. Kimball said in an interview that the first time he heard this song on the radio, it was when he had set his alarm to wake up early, because he had a lot of things to do and when the alarm went off, the radio station had the song on. He was so excited that he immediately called Paich and yelled at him on the phone that the song was playing on the radio.

2. Africa:

This song reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1983. It was written by David Paich and Jeff Porcaro. Many people think this is the band's best-known song because of its hit.

3. Rosanna:

Rosanna was written by the band's keyboardist, David Paich, and it is rumored that this song was a tribute to Rosanna Arquette, an American actress who was involved in a love affair with one of Toto's members.

I hope you liked my post, this is a band that has a lot of history and deserves to be recognized for its enormous talent.

I share with you a cover that my sister and I made of "Rosanna":
