Starting on Steemit

First of all let’s get one thing clear, everyone hops on Steemit expecting to make money, or else you wouldn’t be here, and regardless of what you have been led to believe making money on Steemit is not easy. You are told it is free money, in a way it is, you can make money by using the time you normally use online. But it is not exactly free because you still have to work to get that money, I have spent about a year and a half on Steemit and have been active for about one year, now I am not a Steemit success story, but I haven’t done that bad either, so I do think I can give you some tips.

Of course the easiest way to make money here is to buy a lot of Steem, convert it to Steem Power, create an upvote bot that will curate for you and just sit back and receive a steady income every day, while your Steem balance grows as the price of Steem hopefully goes up. But of course not all of us have the means to invest 50 or 100 thousand dollars in a venture like this. So that leaves us with one option, work for it.

I know of three ways to make money with Steemit, they are the following:

  • Posting
  • Curating
  • Commenting

Posting is just writing an article, uploading a photograph or a video. Sounds easy, but frankly these three options are hit or miss, it all depends on the audience you have, if your article is good or better yet you are on some upvote bots lists, your post will get upvotes which equal money. Now the higher your REP (the number besides your username) the more visibility you will have, for example when I look at new posts I almost instinctively discard the posts from people who have a REP lower than mine, because I have the belief that:
a)The high REP authors are high REP because they have had innumerable upvotes because they produce quality posts.
b)If I upvote a high REP author he might just upvote me back, and probably with a high value vote.
Probably both beliefs are wrong, the guy might be a high REP thanks to bots, and might not even look at who votes for him. But I think this tendency to vote for higher REP authors is practically universal on Steemit.

Curating is just the act of upvoting a post, again upvoting for a high REP author increases the chances of better rewards, but in any case if you curate you will be rewarded, the higher your vote value the higher your reward.

Commenting is just that, a comment on someones article, here again you are hoping the author will upvote your comment and hopefully look at your blog and upvote a couple of your posts. Comments should be more than one liners and relevant to the posts content to be of any value, you don’t want people to think you are just spamming.

Those are the ways I do make money on Steemit, after all this time I have made one terrible mistake, I did not specialize on one topic, that is what you have to do, if you are good at cooking just write about cooking, make people know you are an authority on this subject, so that when they want to read something about it they will think @x is great on this subject I have to see if he has anything on this posted. I write about anything that comes to my head and invariably get very low rewards, so specialize.

Now I think that another must is to increase your REP as much as you can, as I told you this gives you much more visibility and increases your chances of getting votes. I unfortunately powered down all I had, and am starting nearly from scratch all over again, and now it is even more difficult to get SP because of Steem’s price. You can power up 100%, I now don’t do that I have 50-50 because if I need money I will always have Steem available and besides I won’t have to power down.

So you have to get into a routine, spend at least an hour on Steemit every day (I spend more than that) try to post an article every day, upvote until you have only 80% of your voting power left, don’t use more than that 20% because it will take that much longer to get to full voting power, and comment, the upvotes you get for comments really help you out in increasing your REP and are also cash into your SBD account. Of course there is another way of increasing your REP, this is to use upvote bots, which for a price, usually in SBD’s will upvote your post, the downside is that sometimes you actually lose money with these bots, but you can weigh this and see if it is of any benefit to you.

Well that is about all I can say for now, don’t get discouraged if at first you only get one upvote or just make a penny, eventually things will start looking up, join a guild, a discord channel, use the Steemit chat or join a Facebook Steemit group, get your name out there, I bet you will eventually start getting rewarded.
