The first female scientists- Part 2
You can find Part 1 here:
Hi all !
We had stop to Damo in the previous part and now its time to reveal some more female scientists, first of their kind.
DEINO (6th century BC).
Wife of Vrondino. Student and mother-in-law of Pythagoras, numerologist. She studied, according to Dasypodious, the incomplete numbers. A number is called incomplete when its true divisors (the divisors outside of itself), if added, give a sum less than the same number. So number 8 is incomplete because 1 + 2 + 4 = 7 <8
DIOTIMA from Mantineia (6th - 5th century BC).
In the "Symposium" of Plato, Socrates refers to his Teacher Diotima, a priesthood in Mantineia, who was a Pythagorean and a scholar of pythagorean numerosophia. According to Xenophon, Diotima was holding the knowledge of the most difficult geometrical theorems.
ELORIS the Samian (6th century BC).
Student of Pythagoras. Holding knowledge of Geometry.
THEANO (6th century BC)Theono Thouria was an ancient Greek mathematician and astronomer. She came from the Thurians of Lower Italy, the daughter of Doctor Vrontinos. She was a student and a fiery follower of Pythagoras. She married in Samos the great Myst with whom she had 36 years of age difference. She taught at the Pythagorean schools of Samos and Croton. Theano is considered the soul of number theory, which played a dominant and crucial role in Pythagorean teaching. She is also been attributed to the Pythagorean view of the "Golden Section"and to various cosmological theories. After the death of Pythagoras ,Theano succeeded him as the leader of the now dispersed community. With the help of her daughters (Damo, Myia or Myria and Arignotis) she spread the scientific and philosophical pythagorean system throughout Hellas and Egypt. Theano wrote a bibliography of Pythagoras, which was lost. With Pythagoras , besides the daughters had two sons, Tilaugis and the Mnisarhos. Iamblichos mentions it as a 'mathematician worthy memory in education'.
THEMISTOCLEIA (6th century BC)
Diogenes (Laertios) scholar-writer mentions her as Aristokleia or Theocleia. Pythagoras took most of his moral principles from the Delphic Priesthood of Themistocleia, which at the same time introduced him to the principles of numeracy and geometry. According to the philosopher Aristoxenos (4th century BC) Themistokleia taught mathematics to those of Delphi's visitors who had the relative appeal. The myth states that Themistokleia had decorated the altar of Apollo with geometric shapes. According to Aristoxenos, Pythagoras admired the knowledge and wisdom of Themistocleia, which prompted him to accept women ,later in his School .
LASTHENIA (4th century BC)
Lasthenia from Arkadia had studied the works of Plato and came to the Academy (Plato) to study mathematics and philosophy. She studied dressed as a man in the Academy because women were not allowed. After Plato's death, she continued her studies near her nephew Spefsippus. Later she became a philosopher and companion of him.
MELISSA (6th century BC)
Student of Pythagoras. She dealed with the construction of regular polygons. Lovon Argeos writes about an unknown work of her: "THE CIRLE (MELISSA) IS THE OF ALL THE WRITTEN POLYGONS".
MYIA (6th century BC)
Daughter of Pythagoras and Theanos. Pythagorian and herself, wife of Milonos from Croton. She taught at the Croton School. She was holding the knowledge of geometry. She is attributed to the invention of analogy.
PERICTIONIS (5th century BC)
Pythagorean philosopher, writer and mathematician. Various sources identify her as mother of Plato and daughter of Critius. Mathematician and philosopher Plato, owes to her his first acquaintance with mathematics and philosophy . Plato does not mention the slightest about his mother. He was deeply disapointed with her because she married an Athenian named Pyrilambis, after the death of Ariston (Plato's father).
POLYGNOTIS (7th - 6th century BC)
The historian Lovon Argeos reports the Polygnotis as a companion and student of Thalos. Known in many different geometrical theories, it is said (Vitruvius testimony) that she also contributed to the simplification of the numerical symbols by introducing the principle of the acronym, namely by introducing alphabetical letters that each corresponded to a number. Thus, the initial Δ represents the number 10. Letter X, from HILIA(in Greek) represents the number 1000 etc.
See you in the next post. Till then take care!

Nothing has been saved from her work! ...... I believe it is not lost, but it must exist in idiosyncratic collections as well as the episthematical writings of the library of Alexandria that they burned!
Who can prove that the library with its content ,burned indeed?
I have made a small research over internet regarding your question.
I have found a source here http://www.hellinon.net/NeesSelides/VivliothikiAlexandreias.htm
In my opinion, it is a reliable source, since I have read a book on the subject and I'm sure it has taken graphic material from the same book I have.
In any case, if you are more interested in the subject, I can look for it.
Females have great contribution in every aspect of our life including development of science. Some are known while others are unknown. By the way, you have mentioned a good number of female heroes in science. Keep posting.
thanks for the comment

very nice article, thanks for the great effort, thanks.
Upvuted.
