Asked exactly for what was burned at the stake, Giordano Bruno, every middle-aged man would say that the scientist was a supporter of Copernicus's heliocentric system, according to which Earth revolves around the sun. Historians, however think that Giordano Bruno has been condemned by the Holy Inquisition not for that? .. But what for? On the engravings we have seen, Giordano Bruno looks very young. In fact, at the time he was thrown at the stake he was 52. Some also refute the commonplace fact that he was a scientist. They claim that Bruno was a wandering Dominican monk and philosopher who traveled around Europe and taught at universities, but he was often expelled from them for heretical reasoning. Well, a scientist or not, Giordano Bruno is the author of two dissertations, so it is definitely, according to our current understanding, a scientist. It turns out that back in time May were more precise in handing out titles than today, because each dissertation work was subject to strict confirmations. And the works of Giordano Bruno were rather imaginary, poetic reasoning - they were not written according to the concepts of scientific treatise. Giordano Bruno is the author of more than 30 scientific reflections, though not in the "canonical" style of the time. In them he develops the theories that the universe is infinite; that the stars are distant suns about which they travel around the planets; that there are other habitable worlds besides the Earth. From today's point of view, quite modern ideas. Nicholaus Copernicus' heliocentric theory, complemented Giordano Bruno's religious-philosophical concepts, and he liked it too much. Obviously, Bruno himself has regarded himself more as a preacher than a scientist.

According to expert theologians, Bruno was not an atheist, but he believed that there are many shortcomings in religion that stop the free interpretation of theology and obstruct science. Giordano Bruno was categorically against dogmatic Christianity. In particular, he completely rejected the idea of the immaculate conception and divine origin of Christ. The 1592 delation, written by a Venetian aristocrat against Giordano Bruno, described his "heretical views," in the sense that Christ, according to him, had committed miracles; that he did not die voluntarily but wanted to avoid death; that there is no retribution for sins; that there is a rebirth of souls from one being to another; that people like animals are conceived in debauchery; that the monks who take money, shame themselves and the world. The case against Giordano Bruno lasts 8 years. The Holy Fathers tried to prove that the monk's views were full of contradictions, but he did not give up his views.

The tribunal of St. the Inquisition declares him to be a "unrepentant and adamant heretic", deprives him of a spiritual sanity, excludes him from the church, and transmits it to the hands of the secular court. It turns out that nothing related to the heliocentric system is present in the indictment. It emphasized only that Giordano Bruno denies Christian doctrine and undermines religious belief. Some view this as an indictment against Giordano Bruno that he has created a new religious philosophical doctrine designed to deny the Almighty God? Does it appear that he was condemned as a heretic and not as a scientist? The punishment "without shedding blood" - the burning of the stake was carried out in mid-February 1600 in Rome. In 1889 a monument was built in place of the stake in honor of Giordano Bruno. Anyway, today, the church has not rabbled its memory, as it did with Galileo Galilei. In the eyes of the papacy, Bruno remains an apostate of the faith and a heretic. They attribute to him the following phrase before death: "To burn it is not to refute!" - "And that's probably the real words of Giordano Bruno, while" It's still spinning! "May still be the words of Galileo," historians says.

Persecution of knowledge and independent thought by organised religion ! :) .... Good article. Thank you for telling us interesting facts :)

Yes, I often think about whether there are people fighting for the truth today. I think, that the truth is just a veil, there are always some backward thoughts behind it, hidden interest. I recently watched Scorsese's "Silence", there he raises the topic theto fight for truth for the truth itself, not to live better thanks to her. :)

I agree. Truth is covered in layers of veils. Lifting of each veil reveals another face. However, nothing is unconnected. It important to view the old truth in a new light with the new truth unfolding as the veil lifts. The truth of millions of ages cannot be understood by one mind or one generation. Having an open mind is the most important thing :) ... I will watch "silence" ... I like such movies ... :)

Nice one man! I got a book of him here in the house so now I'm planning to read it.
