War Machine (film) : Not Brad Pitt's finest work
There are a lot of war films out there. There are a lot of people that could argue that it is the most popular genre for movies and some of my personal favorites of all time fall in that line. Biopics are fun as well and this one presents itself in a believable fashion as being based on fact. Unfortunately, it is not based on fact and for the most part the things that happen in this movie, while believable, just aren't terribly entertaining.

This movie is complete satire about the horrible occupation that the United States has undertaken in Afghanistan for most of my adult life and how every now and then a general will come along that promises to be the solution to the problem that is "how do we end this?? Brad Pitt plays exactly that sort of general in this movie

Pitt plays the role of 4-star General Glen McMahon who is a decorated and celebrated leader of combat from Iraq that is sent to Afghanistan because Obama is convinced he is exactly the guy that is needed to finally end the ongoing conflict in that country. I want to state again that all the characters in this film are completely fictional (other than Karzai and Obama, who doesn't actually appear in the film but the doppelganger and creative camera angles make it appear as though he is.)
McMahon is respected and feared by his men and he is given a blank slate and a bland check to to what needs to be done in order to achieve victory. There is only one thing that he is not allowed to do - he can NOT request more troops to be sent to the country - which he almost immediately does.

There are a bunch of great actors in this film including Ben Kingsley who looks alarmingly like President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan. Other notable actors include Topher Grace (who I don't actually like,) Tilda Swinton (also don't like but does a good job in most things,) and Will Poulter (who I REALLY like and don't think gets enough roles.) However, the "hey I know that person!" factor that exists in the film isn't really enough to take away from the fact that this film is actually quite boring.
For one thing, it kind of promises to be a wartime action-oriented film but instead of that it delivers a rather boring but-intended-to-be-funny presentation of the politics that takes place behind the scenes in American military operations.

the Obama sequences were pretty brilliantly shot
There is only one full action battle scene in the entire film and it is over entirely too fast. That particular part of the film is great and i really would have liked to see more of them because what is portrayed is very close to what friends of mine who actually did serve in Afghanistan describe.
I have sort of high expectations of Brad Pitt and I feel as though for the most part he delivers in this roles. I do not consider this film to be a failure because of Mr. Pitt, i think the movie is just a poorly designed script that promises action but instead has an element of satire that was meant to be funny but unfortunately doesn't achieve that end, but just manages to be sad and boring. I think their attempt was to point out the futility of war in Afghanistan and i suppose if you look hard enough, that is kind of what they portray but they try a little to hard to make this a subtle comedy in the process.
I can't really recommend this film especially considering that Netflix currently has tens of thousands of films to pick from. I would say, despite the star-power present in this one, to give it a miss.
5 / 10

So if you were looking for an action movie, a drama or even something remotely patriotic then this is not the film for you.
I thought the film was clever and I think you have totally missed the nuance of it. It's a satire and it does a pretty good job of showing just how idiotic the interventionist policy in the Middle East can be.
I follow the work Brad Pitt
To be honest, I have never been a great fan of his acting, I find him so wishy washy.
I kind of agree with you. However, since he has a great rapport with directors and producers he tends to get offered roles in good films just like his pal Leo. The movies they are both in are good in spite of them (for the most part) not because of them.
I would watch Leo over Brad any day... but then I might be slightly bias due to my weak at the knees opinion of Leo's looks hahahahaha!!! 😁
Brad was good in Thelma and Louise... it's been downhill from there..
I think we all expect it to be "awesome " because it stars Brad Pitt. I have not seen this movie, but maybe it is a good one to skip.
Thats a dissappointment. Was looking forward to this.
I dont know if youve watched the Jack Ryan series on prime, but the second season is getting ready to come out. I thought it was worth the watch and just rewatched the first season to get ready for the second.
gooddream!!!
Meant to ask this for a few days now but only NOW i have the chance for Steemitting 😁

I recently watched Ad Astra. I didn't think Brad Pitt was that great in that one either. The story was not that good either, IMO. I was thinking of seeing War Machine, but yeah, after this review and the last bad experience I think I will indeed skip it. Thanks.
you may recall that i was pretty unimpressed with Ad Astra also. I really liked Brad in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but i am starting to have difficulty remembering any films where he was truly exceptional.
I knew I had seen something about it somewhere. Duh! Haha. I totally didn't connect that it was you who had posted about it.
I have never watched Once upon a time in Hollywood. I will check it out. I liked 7 Years in Tibet myself.
could it be that Pitt is one of the pretty boys that made the right connections early on in his career and pulls big numbers just based on being Brad Pitt despite the fact that he really doesn't do anything special? I think his most cringeworthy role would be Interview with a Vampire, but then again almost everyone in that film other than Tom Cruise was pretty cringey.
When i said that once upon a time in Hollywood was one of the best films of 2019 i meant it, but then friends of mine said they hated the movie and nearly left the theater... i guess we all have our own movie types.
Sounds like a case of a movie not living up to what it really could have been. That is too bad. I really like Pitt as an actor and I kind of feel like most everything he touches is gold. I will admit he has some misses though. I really love Snatch. That is probably one of my most favorite Brad Pitt movies.
