Grapthar's Song of the Day: Thrice - 'Firebreather'

Thrice - Firebreather
Thrice is a band that has been
a constant in my life since probably 2002 or so, when I first heard them. They were formed in 1998 in Irvine, CA by singer/guitarist Dustin Kensrue and guitarist Teppei Teranishi, later adding brothers Eddie Breckenridge and Riley Breckenridge on bass and drums, respectively. Their early music was a metal infused brand of punk, with some emo/metalcore elements, though I always felt they were more unique than a lot of the bands doing similar things. As I grew and my tastes expanded, Thrice was also growing and evolving, which helped them feel like they were always relevant to me. Since I first heard the, they've released 8 albums, 2 of which are 2 parts each.

This song comes from one of those
2 part albums, 2007's The Alchemy Index Vols. I & II: Fire and Water, specifically from the fire half of the album. The Alchemy Index albums consist of 4 element themed albums: Fire, Water, Earth and Air. The Fire album is the most intense, while the rest are much more 'chill', incorporating electronic elements and much more expansive songwriting. I do love every part of the series, but the Fire portion is probably my favorite. Although it clearly has a metal influence, the songwriting is really unique, and much more similar to the 'post-metal' bands that were coming to the forefront in this time period.
