Black Sabbath are definitely

one of the most influential rock bands of all time, who helped to define the entire genre of heavy metal/hard rock, and establish the style and techniques that bands would use for decades to come. The band was formed in 1968 in Birmingham, England by singer Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward. Iommi was the principle songwriter for the group, and despite Ozzy taking the lead vocalist role, most of the lyrics were written by Butler. The heavy guitar tone and style that Iommi created partly came from physical issues; Iommi lost the tips of a few fingers in an accident when he was young, so he used finger caps to play guitar which created a super unique timbre that helped define their sound.

This song comes from

the band's 1973 album of the same title, and is the quintessential Sabbath song in my eyes. The main progression uses a basic i, III, Vii, Vi progression like many other rock/pop groups, but with the heavy, palm muted style creates something much heavier than their contemporaries. The most interesting part of the song is the break/ending, with Ozzy's incredibly high vocal part, and the groovy palm muted guitar riff, which utilizes a III and a # III/b iv, which creates an awesome, dark dissonance.
