Grapthar's Song of the Day: Weather Report 'Teen Town'

Weather Report - Teen Town
I was listening to an incredible
solo bass cover of this song today, so I figured it'd be a good song of the day! Weather Report were a jazz/jazz fusion band, formed in 1970 in New York City. Though initially they were more of an avant-garde jazz band, incorporating elements of rock/prog., as the members changed over the years, they went in a much more funk/R&B oriented direction, though never fully abandoning the experimental spirit of their early years. The band hosted a number of musicians who have since become legends in the jazz world, including bassist Jaco Pastorius, Miroslav Vitouš, and drummer Peter Erskine, along with many others.

This song is from the band's
1977 album, Heavy Weather, the band's most commercially successful album. In recent years, this song has become a staple in jazz education, and is generally considered to be a jazz classic at this point. I believe this track was written by Jaco, and he performs both the bass and drum parts, which are both incredibly performed. Jaco had a great ear for interesting harmony, and it definitely shows here; some parts of the song feel reasonably straight-forward, then suddenly, something original and wild will appear. Despite the changes, it all manages to feel coherent, and everything is in service of the song as a whole.
