Elon Musk leaves his seat in OpenAI working on artificial intelligence and security.

Technology billionaire Elon Musk leaves the board of directors of OpenAI, a non-profit research group working on the ethics and security of artificial intelligence that Y Combinator president Sam Altman has created. Progress was announced in a brief blog post that explains Musk's dismissal of OpenAI's work and the disagreement between Tesla's research on machine learning to improve autonomous driving.

"Since Tesla continues to focus more on AI, this is going to remove a potential dispute for Elon," the article says. Musk will continue to make donations to the OpenAI and be found in group discussions. The blog post also announced the name of several new donors, including video game developer Gabe Newell, Skype founder Jaan Tallinn and former US and Canadian Olympic athletes Ashton Eaton and Brianne Theisen-Eaton.

OpenAI said it has expanded its funding base to increase the number of investors. This is crucial for those concerned about AI's recent effects in areas such as surveillance and propaganda. OpenAI was founded only two years ago, but quickly became an important voice in the global machine learning community.

Research has been extensive, including teaching computers to control robots with minimal instruction (One-shot Learning) and creating AI agents to play the popular video game Dota. This week, the agency has contributed to a multi-faceted report on ways AI could be used maliciously over the next five years. OpenAI will continue to develop secure artificial intelligence.
