Witnesses run the whole back-end of steemit, they secure your wallet, and confirm transactions and allow you to make posts, and secure the USD price feed. You should ony vote for witnesses you feel are trustworthy.
You can see the witnesses here and look at their witness thread for info about them. Asking someone else to tell you who to follow/vote for is fine but use your own judgement too.
