Tranquiltiy Remembered

in #history8 years ago

Here we're looking west from Sunset at Highland. That's Hollywood High School in the next block behind all those palm trees on the right. We'll take a closer look at Hollywood High tomorrow, but for now, savor the residential tranquility of this scene. That tranquility has long since been replaced with high-value land use.

Hollywood reminds me of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - what the hell is the matter with developers? Even self-interest takes into account long-range planning and the ambiance of streets with mature trees and well-laid out neighbourhoods.

Apparently there is a formula according to which the value of a mature tree declines at a rate inversely proportional to the value of the land in which it is growing. Fortunately, there are a couple of mountain ranges nearby with lots of trees. That's because developers haven't figured out how to build high-rises on vertical surfaces. Give 'em time.
