'Elevators' - 100 Day Poetry Contest Day 54

in #steemitschoolpoetry7 years ago (edited)

Welcome... To a 100 day journey into the poetic minds of the @steemitschool writing community!

Yes... it's not just me who's a part of this epic journey of daily inspiration and sharing... but over 100 others too!

I am so excited and honored to be a part of THIS INCREDIBLE CONTEST devised and facilitated by the legend that is @d-pend.

Today's piece is inspired by something you hear in the personal development world repeated over and over -

You become the average of the 5 people that you spend the most time with.

It's so important to surround yourself with good people that actively help push you to the next level, inspire you, admire you and are growing themselves too.

Because then... that's what you'll do too.

Elevators

Why is it that so often the people we would most expect to lift us up,
Are the ones that bring us down,
Grappling hook,
Locked in,
Dragging,
Pulling
Down.
Then people we’ve just met can give us fuel to pierce atmospheres,
Escape stratospheres,
Soar infinitely,
Propelled By Love,
Shed the weight of fear.

Why?
Why do our nearest and dearest fail to really drive us?
Push us forward,
Lift Us Up,
Encourage us to thrive,
To do whatever we need to do so that we -
Feel Fully Alive.
If people choose to hate,
That’s part of their fate.
Don’t let their negativity,
Stop you from becoming great.
Striving for excellence,
To be the best one can be,
By surrounding yourself with positive people,
Who want to see you
Soar Free.

The message being conveyed in your piece, unfortunately, is an issue many face. I hope you find some comfort in this fact. You are not alone. Your poem is contrite, straightforward, and to the point. The pain is not prettified, which is a strength of this piece.

That said, there is a lot of ranting here. And please, do not see this as a negative, in fact, it is a strength. It goes well with the accessibility of your poem. This latter point is what endeared me to your poem.

On a different note, @hartfloe. I would suggest you look into the following lines. And think about revising them. The first one is:

If people choose to hate,
That’s part of their fate.

There is a contradiction here. Fate is something that is preordained, hence I do not think choose is the word that should be used here.

Also, look into:

Don’t let their negativity,
Stop you from becoming great.

This sounds more like motivational speaking. And might I daresay, somewhat hackneyed and cliche.

Overall, a wonderful piece. Happy reading it.

The concern expressed with rhetorical lyricism is very authentic and is important for the serene growth of the human being. To a certain extent, it is not intentional, but it occurs as a sort of reverse psychology bounce that, those that we hope will give us support, simply assume that the greatest support is oneself conscious. However, that tacit awareness is not always present and that is why we need stimuli, as "elevators". Good job, brother!

Thank you for your comment. I am glad you enjoyed reading this :) I think often it comes from the ego - in fact always it comes from the ego - because the ego doesn't like to see other people progressing and 'getting ahead' of them - so if it can stifle that progress in anyway - the most subtlest way is to just not give the support and encouragement that their 'true self' would give.

But oh well. I will always have my friends here - and although they don't really push me to where I want to go - I will still always love them and support them in everything that they do.

But in terms of my daily surroundings - I need to get myself into a tribe of people that truly believe in me and want to help me excel to the next level and beyond... So that's what I am calling in right now!

Thanks again.
