The amazing case of Trenton McKinley, the boy who regained consciousness a day before he was disconnected in the United States
The family of Trenton McKinley says that what happened with this 13-year-old was a miracle.
The teenager suffered a severe brain trauma last March when a cargo trailer in which he was mounted overturned and fell on his head.
Trenton suffered seven skull fractures in the accident, which occurred in Mobile, Alabama, in the southern United States.
After the accident, explained his mother, Jennifer Reindl. Trenton underwent several craniotomy surgeries and suffered from kidney failure and cardiac arrest,
At one point, Trenton "died" in the operating room for about 15 minutes, Reindl said.
Brain Death
After the interventions, the doctors told the parents that their son would not recover and they even declared his "brain death", according to the American chain CBS News.
They were also informed that their organs were compatible with the bodies of five children who needed transplants, the mother told CBS.
When she learned that her son's organs could save other children, the woman signed the donation documents.
"We said yes, so they kept Trenton alive just to clean their organs," Reindl recalled.
A day before he was disconnected and had the last brain wave test to determine the time of his death, Trenton showed signs of consciousness.
"His vital signs went off, so they canceled the test," the mother said.
Recovery
Trenton is now in a slow process of recovery.
"I hit the concrete and the trailer fell on my head, after that, I do not remember anything," the boy told the local network WALA-TV.
He still has pains and seizures, and will need surgery to reimplant a part of the skull that doctors keep frozen.
But the young man walks and talks, even reads and develops math exercises, said Reindl, who considers his son's case "a miracle."
Trenton himself told WALA-TV that he believes he went to heaven while unconscious.
"I was in an open field walking straight," said the 13-year-old boy. "There is no other explanation than God."
The family is raising funds through a Facebook page to pay for medical expenses.
