Lloyd the Lonely Rooster - Introduction
Meet Lloyd. Lloyd came to us the same time as Foghorn. None of the chickens like Lloyd. If Lloyd leaves the safety of the sheep pen, the other chickens attack and send him right back. Even the ones that were hatched only a few months ago chase him away.
Lloyd lives in the sheep pen with our pregnant ewes. He eats with them, goes out in the field with them, and even rests on top of them. He sleeps in their hay crib.
Lloyd serve no purpose. He can't get close enough to fertilize any eggs and he doesn't have his own flock. But I feel sorry for him and I don't want to get rid of him. He is the prettiest rooster.
So that's Lloyd. I will continue to try to get photos of him sitting on the sheep. It's too funny. He follows them around like he is one of them! I hope getting rid of Foghorn and the other two little roosters, Lloyd can reacquaint himself with the ladies and be leader of our flock!
Thanks for looking! Stay tuned!

He is so pretty!!
I was wondering, how was your original introduction process? I don't want to ramble off information you may already know, but, I am curious and may have some ideas for you to try, IF you want to! We can talk about it over chat, if you'd rather.
Oh man, I guess I had this up for two days in another tab and never hit post. MY BAD. Lol.
That's actually pretty hilarious. Sounds like something I would do!
We acquired Lloyd and Foghorn at the same time. Foghorn kind of ran Lloyd off and won't let him wander out of the sheep pen. We are hoping after we get rid of Foghorn (who is an asshole) that maybe Lloyd will have more confidence and come visit the ladies more often.
Okay, but how did you introduce them to the flock? Did you get them from the same person? Do you have a sort of introduction process that you follow?
I’m super curious. Haha
This was our first time introducing a chicken that wasn't originally a chick here. We just kinda...let them go. Foghorn immediately took over the hens and chased Lloyd away. We got them from a small animal auction, they were in the same cage/lot. We should probably have done it differently, but at the time we didn't think much about it.
Ooooooooooohhhh well this could have been the problem to begin with!
So next time you introduce any chickens have them in one of those large wire dog kennels inside the coop (if it’s big enough) or somewhere near the coop where everyone can get to know these new additions for at least a week, two is better. I did a week and a half. Next time try it and see if it’s better. When you get rid of the other roosters, you should catch this one and do this process after they’re gone.
I'm definitely trying this next time! I will try it with Lloyd after Foghorn and his cronies have left. He's such a pretty rooster, he deserves some ladies.
Oh good!! Be sure to document the process of either butchering or selling to auction if you can! I’d be interested in reading it! And your process of introducing to the flock! :)
Probably auctioning. The husband doesn't think butchering the young roosters would be worth the trouble. Instead someone who needs a rooster in their flock can just buy them at the auction...or they can buy and butcher them themselves. We just aren't prepared to mess with it.
He's a good looking rooster! I like his comb.
I like his comb too! It's unique. I've never seen one like it. Even when we sell the other roosters, we are keeping Lloyd.
He looks a lovely thing - shame he's picked on. Is he safe from predators in the sheep's hay rack? That would worry me!
The hay rack is inside the sheep's pen, so as long as the sheep are safe, Lloyd should be okay. I don't know what the plans are when it gets cold. It doesn't seem very warm under there. Maybe he will figure it out and go nestle in the hay.
Good-o. I worry about these things. LOL. Maybe you could put a little plastic around the top to keep out the drafts and rain? He'd probably be okay then.
My husband mentioned building him his own little house. Hopefully that gets done before the cold winds come. If not, definitely some fortification done to the hay crib for him.
Sounds like Foghorn and the other roosters are jealous of Lloyd's good looks!
I vote to keep Lloyd... he needs to have a dalliance of the chicken coop once in his life.. LONG Live Lloyd!

I'm hoping once he becomes our only rooster some of the hens will take a shine to him. Unless he seriously thinks he is a sheep. I've seen him try to woo them.
Uh-oh... Lloyd suffering from identity crisis? Not good... not good at all lol
We had a goat years ago and two dogs. The goat (Oliver) wore a collar just like the dogs, he slept in the lean-to of the chicken coop and when the dogs would go outside and roam the property, Oliver would follow them. When I called the dogs to eat, Oliver came running right with them. It was hilarious!
That would be too cute! I want a goat or a sheep like that. How funny to see!
Poor Lloyd. I think it may be worth doing a test and temporarily removing the other roosters. If Lloyd can move in and makes friends with the ladies, then you'll be good to go with getting rid of Foghorn and the little ones.
I don't feel bad for lloyd at all, he gets carted around the field by his favorite sheepers!! He strikes me as a stag kind of man, "too much drama for me ladies!"
