PALMANOVA - Italy - UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017

Hello everyone, with this post I invite you to participate in the beautiful project of @pennsif, that is #steematlas this beautiful map where you can share points that can also be useful to other people who maybe want to visit the same places that you have visited and maybe in this way have additional information that is always very useful. Today, I want to talk to you in my opinion about a city, which a few years ago entered the UNESCO heritage, a city that has a very particular shape, in fact if you look at it from above you see a nine-pointed star, I'm talking about Palmanova a municipality of about 5000 inhabitants in the province of Udine in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Its history dates back to the Republic of Venice, which built it starting in 1593 with the project of these engineers to create a fortress city made up of three concentric walls and several access gates. This was because they wanted to strengthen the Republic's defenses against the risk of Turkish invasions, but also to block the expansionist aims of the Habsburg family. Special Collections Toronto Public Library from Toronto, Canada, CC BY-SA 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0, via Wikimedia Commons These are not the first fortresses of the Republic of Venice that you visit, in fact I also recommend you visit Bergamo, Peschiera del Garda, Sebenico, and Zara. Here too you can admire the Venetian defense works that were built that will take you on a journey through history but also through the architecture of the time. To reach Palmanova is very simple, here I will give you some examples both from Milan and Venice which let's say that touristically they are two of the cities that are most visited by tourists, from Milan there is the possibility of using the train and the journey lasts on average 5 hours with a change in Venice Mestre and another in Cervignano But some services some trains can be even faster and the cost of train tickets can vary between €30 and €150. Another alternative from Milan is the bus but here it takes about 7 and a half hours but the ticket costs much less It varies between 13 and 20 euros the Flixbus company is the one that offers more daily trips but in any case you arrive in Udine then you have to find another transfer to Palmanova. Anyway below I always leave you a very useful link to find information: https://www.visitpalmanova.it/faq-2/ Another thing in my opinion is very useful for tourists who want to visit this place, are the events and cultural activities among these the most important are the historical reenactments that are held in the first week of September that retrace a bit of the history of the fortress with more than 1000 figures in period costume, another very important festival also felt for the city of Venice the feast of the Santissimo Redentore that is held on the second Sunday of July and let's say this includes a religious procession and here too you can see people in Venetian period costumes and among other things there is also the commemoration with the raising of the Venetian flag in the main square and also there are several guided tours of the bastions and also tastings of local products. https://ita.travel/en/palmanova-impregnable-fortress-from-the-times-of-napoleon-990.htm Below I leave you some very interesting information to better plan your visit, because it is better to take advantage of these services that are practically free👇 The Palmanova Tourist Office is located in Borgo Udine, 4. You can contact them by phone at +39 0432 924815 or by email at turismo@comune.palmanova.ud.it or info.palmanova@promoturismo.fvg.it. The official website is www.visitpalmanova.it or www.turismofvg.it/Palmanova. Opening hours (July): Monday to Saturday 09:00-13:00 and 14:00-18:00; Sunday 09:00-13:00. In the months of June, July and August it is open every day from 10:00 to 12:00, and on Saturdays also from 16:00 to 18:00. I hope my information has been useful, and I hope you can visit this important city very particular but very beautiful to visit.History of the city

Surely the part that struck me most of this important city was Piazza Grande which is practically the beating heart of Palmanova that can be reached from the three access gates of the city, it was practically the square where all the garrisons trained and gathered, and from this square you can admire the Doge's Cathedral which however was built around 1600, also because you have to consider that the construction of this city lasted several years.
One last thing to add, Palmanova was built by an important architect of whom I have spoken again because he also built several villas always during the Venetian Republic and it was Vincenzo Scamozzi also because let's say he was a famous urban planner of the time, a bit like Renzo Piano now.
Anyway, below I leave you some links perhaps to do some further study on the history of this important city: https://www.visitpalmanova.it/en/city-fortress/

How to reach the city
While from Venice there is always the train and there are also several buses, and the distance is shorter, while those arriving by plane have the possibility of landing at the Trieste Ronchi dei Legionari airport which would be the official airport of Trieste and is new and very beautiful and practically Palmanova is about 35 km from this airport.
