Self-driving Delivery Robots - Food Walks Around Us in Robot Containers
A lot of buzz has been carried on around the innovative idea or issue concerned with self-driving cars. The biggest issue that arises is related to the ownership of responsibility in case an accident happens, or when the human is not able to override car functions or when the car overrides human actions.
Recently, I came across a different type of self-driving cars, but of smaller dimensions and that is the self-driving delivery robot.
It was built by the Starship Company (https://www.starship.xyz/) and it’s been given tasks such as food delivery from restaurants. The robot travel at a speed of 4-6 km/h, on the sidewalks, around people. Business Insider followed the robot on the first day on the job and captured its activity and the reaction of the people encountered. The robot’s behavior resembled the human’s: it stopped when the traffic light was red, it took pictures and whenever a new situation (as they show, crossing the road when there is no traffic light), it asked the human’s assistance. While I think this is not a bad idea, I believe I would have the feeling of living in a world as scripted in cartoons such as “The Jetsons”. I do not believe that these robots could cause harm to humans and I see them as a step forward in our evolution. With the exponential increment in the online shopping and orders, and the need of receiving your order asap, this is the expected way to go.
