Oggi continua a piovere e le previsioni dicono che pioverà per tutto il giorno, decidiamo quindi di andare a visitare la Sacra di San Michele, un’antichissima abbazia, risale all'anno mille, che si trova sul monte Pirchiriano, vicino a Torino. Umberto Eco si ispirò proprio a questa abbazzia per "Il nome della Rosa". All’interno della Chiesa principale sono stati sepolti tutti i reali di casa Savoia. Complice il brutto tempo sono pochissimi i visitatori dell'abbazia, lasciamo la macchina al parcheggio e ci incamminiamo lungo la salita che porta alla Sacra.

Today it continues to rain and forecasts say it will rain all day, so we decide to go and visit the Sacra di San Michele, an ancient abbey, dating back to the year one thousand, located on Mount Pirchiriano, near Turin. Umberto Eco was inspired by this abbey for "The name of the Rose". All the royals of the House of Savoy were buried inside the main church. Thanks to the bad weather there are very few visitors to the abbey, we leave the car in the parking lot and walk along the slope that leads to the Sacra.

Proprio quando siamo quasi arrivati la pioggerellina che ci ha accompagnato fino a qui si trasforma in pioggia battente, facciamo quindi una sosta strategica al bar che si trova a qualche centinaio di metri dall'ingresso della Sacra. Attendiamo, quindi, pazientemente che smetta di piovere a dirotto e ci incamminiamo verso l'ingresso, ci attende ancora una ripida salita per arrivare alla biglietteria. Finalmente ha smesso di piovere e possiamo visitare questo complesso veramente impressionante.

Just when we are almost there the drizzle that has accompanied us up to here turns into pouring rain, so we make a strategic stop at the bar which is located a few hundred meters from the entrance to the Sacra. We wait, therefore, patiently for the pouring rain to stop and we walk towards the entrance, a steep climb awaits us to get to the ticket office. Finally the rain has stopped and we can visit this truly impressive complex.

A partire dall'ingresso ci aspettano una serie infinita di scale, di salite e discese, l'abbazia è veramente monumentale, la visita dura diverse ore ed è veramente interessante. Questa abbazia, insieme ad una in Irlanda, una in Puglia, una in Turchia si troverebbe su una ipotetica linea retta che, partendo dall'Irlanda, termina a Gerusalemme. Sono stato a Gerusalemme, ma non ho visitato nessuna delle altre abbazie, quindi non posso fare paragoni, ma questa vicino a Torino è veramente qualcosa di particolare che merita una visita.

Starting from the entrance, an infinite series of stairs, climbs and descents await us, the abbey is truly monumental, the visit lasts several hours and is really interesting. This abbey, together with one in Ireland, one in Puglia, one in Turkey would be on a hypothetical straight line which, starting from Ireland, ends in Jerusalem. I have been to Jerusalem, but I have not visited any of the other abbeys, so I cannot make comparisons, but this one near Turin is truly something special that is worth a visit.

La prima cosa degna di nota, a mio parere, sebbene sia palesemente molto recente, è questa statua raffigurante San Michele, come tutto il resto in questa abbazia è enorme ed è posta proprio lungo la scalinata di ingresso, come ad accogliere i visitatori

The first thing worth noting, in my opinion, although it is clearly very recent, is this statue of St. Michael, like everything else in this abbey is huge and is placed right along the entrance staircase, as if to welcome visitors

Dopo aver visitato vari locali arriviamo alla chiesa. La chiesa, a differenza di tutto il resto, è piuttosto piccola e per nulla sfarzosa. Al suo interno si trovano vari dipinti, quadri, e affreschi. Tra questi, ovviamente, non poteva mancare quello che raffigura Sam Michele. Al di sotto della chiesa si trova la cripta, dove sono sepolti tutti i reali di casa Savoia, che però non è visitabile. La chiesa, che in teoria sarebbe il nucleo del complesso monumentale della Sacra di San Michele, in effetti, è forse la cosa meno interessante, merita giusto un passaggio veloce.

After visiting various places we arrive at the church. The church, unlike everything else, is quite small and not at all glitzy. Inside there are various paintings, paintings, and frescoes. Among these, obviously, the one depicting Sam Michele could not be missing. Below the church is the crypt, where all the royals of the Savoy family are buried, but it cannot be visited. The church, which in theory would be the nucleus of the monumental complex of the Sacra di San Michele, in fact, is perhaps the least interesting thing, it just deserves a quick passage.

Uscendo dalla chiesa si incontra una piccola stanza dove fanno bella mostra una serie di ex-voto. Si tratta di quadri, targhe e qualunque altra cosa donata dai devoti in seguito a quella che viene creduta una guarigione miracolosa, un evento desiderato, come una nascita molto attesa etc. In bella vista, vicino al passaggio, ecco un ex-voto molto recente: una guarigione dal Covid-19. Trovo veramente incredibile che nel 2020 ancora esistano persone che invece di ringraziare medici ed infermieri si convincono che la loro guarigione sia dovuta all'intercessione di un santo, in questo caso San Michele, eppure, esistono ancora certi personaggi anacronistici.

Leaving the church there is a small room where a series of ex-votos are displayed. These are paintings, plaques and anything else donated by devotees following what is believed to be a miraculous healing, a desired event, such as a long-awaited birth etc. In plain sight, near the passage, here is a very recent ex-voto: a healing from Covid-19. I find it truly incredible that in 2020 there are still people who, instead of thanking doctors and nurses, are convinced that their recovery is due to the intercession of a saint, in this case St. Michael, yet there are still some anachronistic characters.

Purtroppo il panorama dall'alto della Sacra di San Michele in questa giornata piovosa e nuvolosa non è certamente dei più spettacolari, resta comunque una vista mozzafiato sulla Valle di Susa che si stende ai piedi del monte Pirchiriano. Spero di poterci ritornare in una giornata di sole con il cielo terso per poter godere appieno lo spettacolo, per ora mi accontento di quello che si può vedere con questa giornata sfortunata di pioggia.

Unfortunately, the view from the top of the Sacra di San Michele on this rainy and cloudy day is certainly not the most spectacular, there is still a breathtaking view of the Susa Valley that lies at the foot of the mount Pirchiriano. I hope to be able to return on a sunny day with clear skies to be able to fully enjoy the show, for now I am satisfied with what you can see with this unfortunate rainy day.

Anche sull'altro versante il panorama è da vedere, certamente è limitato dalle nuvole, ma dà comunque un'idea della sensazione di dominio della vallata che si prova dall'alto di questa abbazia che ha comunque più le caratteristiche della fortezza che controlla il territorio che del luogo di culto e di preghiera.

Also on the other side the view is worth seeing, it is certainly limited by the clouds, but it still gives an idea of the feeling of domination of the valley that you experience from the top of this abbey which still has more the characteristics of the fortress that controls the territory than the place of worship and prayer.
