The next step in butter coffee: Paleo friendly and herbalicious

in #coffee7 years ago (edited)

Ah, coffee. It is the undisputed Empress of beverages. Ok, maybe I am biased since I am totally addicted.

The dark side of coffee is, of course, the ups and downs and jitters. You have a coffee habit you love, but a few hours after your libation, you are not quite as perky. From an Ayurvedic standpoint, coffee is hot, sharp, light, bitter and pungent. This combo can wreak havoc on your system through the years. Dry skin, loose stools, addiction and withdrawal headaches.

Butter coffee, also known (Trademarked) as Bulletproof coffee, is the addition of grassfed butter, coconut oil or ghee (or a combo thereof), blended with coffee into a frothy latte. This combo takes the edge off the coffee energetics and mellows the jitters and fills your belly (for those of us who coffee but don't breakfast). I had started playing with adding other things to my coffee morning, including maca collagen, sunflower lecithin and Ashwaghanda. This combo, for me gives me the energetic boost, the full belly and the power, without the unwanted side effects. I had no idea this was "a thing" until I posted it to instagram and found out that #superfoodlatte was trending. The world is waking up (with a buzzzz) and smelling the....well, you know.

Superfood lattes are highly customizable and have the potential to help you get your superfood herbs into your body without a barrage of tinctures and pills... also without the smoothie which is too cold for me in winter.

Here is my fave Super-food Latte recipe! The result is a Paleo-friendly, delicious morning drink that satisfies your tummy and gives you energy. Drink, and go for your run. BOOYA!

1 standard French Press of your favorite coffee, beans freshly ground
Dash of alt milk, like hemp, soy or nutmilk
1/2 TSP Sunflower lecithin (this is good for connective tissues and breastfeeding mamas) - it also emulsifies the oil and coffee making it super creamy
1/2 tsp Maca powder
1 tsp Collagen powder
1 Tbsp ghee sub canna-ghee for the experienced ;-)
2 Medjool dates for the sweet

Put all in vitamix or good blender and whiz the heck out of it. Drink lusciously.

Happy you're here, spreading your love of ghee into your coffee and across our Steemit screens. I'm a fan of ayurveda too, and that's where I first learned about the medicinal qualities of ghee–through the book, Perfect Health, by Deepak Chopra. Wishing you all the best with your Steemit journey.

Ah, Perfect health. The perfect intro to Ayurveda! Thanks for your comment. I am brand new to Steemit and I hope to cover the whole board in ghee ;-)

just to be sure ghee is melted butter with the foam taken of is it not ?

ghee is not melted butter. It is slow cooked butter...we don't skim the foam, but rather, let it cook through. When the solids come to the bottom, they are intentionally caramelized and then removed. Leaving it pure fat. What you are describing is mildly clarified butter. They are very different. Ghee can be left un-refrigerated and is very stable for years...the type of clarified butter, that you are describing is perishable. I hope that helps!

Thank you very much i will follow you too.

you mean coffee it self is more accepted in the body by adding this to it? Now i am familiar with always putting butter in my coffee, bacause it brings out the taste of the coffee the same way that cream would do, but health bennefits? I thought scrapping coffee would be best. But this is nice news for a fresh grinded and brewed coffe drinker :-)

Ok, OK...technicallly, scrapping coffee is not a bad idea...but I can't, because it is one of my sincere joys in this life. I use ghee because the energetics of it balance out the coffee. According to ayurvedic medicine and Dr. Lad, adding a pinch of cardamom counters the negative effects as well, in addition to the oil

'for those of us who coffee but don't breakfast' That would be me, but I can't even imagine putting some sort of butter or coconut oil in my coffe :/. How did you get used to it's taste? Part of my coffe ritual is the taste of coffee that I'm used to and I'm scared I would spoil it with adding something like that

it is a bit different, but once you get used to it... Anyway, it is way important to blend it well, otherwise the oil floats. It is pretty delicious.

Hmm, maybe I could try it. Im really curious about the taste and I'll never know unless i give it a go. Thank you for advice! :)

do you like cream in your coffee ? Butter is to stiff battered cream , logical it is an enrichment for a good coffee.

lol it makes me smile! a whole blog about dairy! well.... Ghee.

I have never had ghee. But I love dairy and butter AND COFFEE! so you have my full attention! I am thrilled that @ocd found your post and shared it!
