We need to talk about depression
"no more gray's days"
How often have you been bothered by feeling down, depressed, irritable or hopeless over the last weeks/months/years?
- Not at all
- Several days
- More than half the days
Depression is more than just a low mood, it's a serious mental health condition (illness) that has an impact on both physical and mental health. But what are the signs and symptoms of depression? What causes it?
The symptoms can affect directly or indirectly how you feel, think and handle daily, what makes more dificult to recognize and to get better.
The WHO (World Health Organization) says that more than 300 million people of all ages suffer from depression, an increase of more than 18% between 2005 and 2015. Depression was considered the "evil of the century", that is why we need to talk about depression, the people must to understand the importance of this theme, it can make the difference for someone or for yourselfs.
The principal sings and symptoms are the perssistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy accompanied by inabillity to carry out daily activities, a loss of energy, a change in appetite, sleeping more or less, anxiety, reduced concentration, indecisiveness, restlessness, when long-lasting and with moderate or severe intensity, depression may become a serious health condition and throughts of self-harm or suicide.
Depression is treatable, with talking therapies, changes of habits, antidepressant medication or a combination of these.
Fewer than half of the affected in the worls recive effective treatments (in many countries, fewer than 10%). Barriers to effective care include a lack of resources, lack of trained health-care providers and social stigma associated with mental disorders.
When we talk about the causes or contributing factors we can not say it with 100% certainty where they come from because depression results from a complex interaction os social, psychological and biological factors.
In my next post about this topic I will give some advices how to handle with depression ):(
Seja bem vinda @inaradarck!!
