Making the world better one coffee cup at a time
Yesterday I was sitting at Tampere market hall having coffee and observing people walking by and sitting at the near by tables. A perfect opportunity to stalk and photograph innocent bystanders. Unfortunately, as I was inside, there obviously wasn't light available as much as outside and the day was pretty grayish anyway so that was a bit of a downer and a slight restriction to how I could photograph. But I did get few that I think are worth at least a glimpse.
Finns usually don't have that colorful clothes on. Some may get wild after April or May and wear all kind of crazy colors like yellow or green, but when the fall comes and especially when all the colorful leaves have dropped from the trees and it's wet and dark and gray, the people here usually tend to get gloomy too in every way and wear black, gray and overall dark colors. Red sometimes is an exception, but usually that color also in the fall and winter moths tends to be a bit on the dark side. Patterns (if any) also are pretty lame and something that blends in to the crowds well.
So if I would have waited for more eye catchers to shoot at than the two ladies I spotted with black and white checkered and the baby light pink coat (third last photo), I would still be there, sitting and waiting.
Wearing dark colors when it's dark never has made any sense to me. I tend to get incredibly blue and down and depressed and tired and all that when the winter comes and there's little light available. I do have all kind of cool lights in my home and I do stuff my mouth full of vitamin D every day, but those really are just poor substitutes to proper summer sun. Or winter sun if there's also white snow cover on the ground. Snow is a life savior but when there is none, like this winter has been, I cling for everything that might brighten the day just a little bit more. And one of those is colorful clothes.
But you know, it's tough. Finns just are what they are. Most people have a need to wear dark all the time or at least when it's dark outside. And it's useless to scream all alone in the clothing stores for rainbow colors if I'm the only one doing that. Clothing store owners offer what people want to buy and people buy what store owners offer.
We have a saying in Finland that pretty much sums up how general population thinks about clothes. "Rumat ne vaatteilla koreilee." It's the ugly ones that dazzle with clothes.
The saying tells you about envy. Not trying to be something you are not. About the constant though in a Finns head: "What other people think about me." About being modest. Not sticking out from the crowd. Not being different. And it also tells you about priorities. What kind of clothes one has is not high on the priority list. Practical, intact and clean should be enough. Nothing too fancy. One should not be too vain.
I love colorful people. In every way. Colorful is more fun than always being politically correct.
But as I am a Finn, colorful people should do that in their own time and space on the other side of my camera lens and not bother my darkness with their bright thoughts and outfits more than I can handle.
To further explain this we have a perfect word for that. It's hajurako = the smell gap. It means that one should not get too friendly with someone in certain situations. Keep strangers at least arms length away. Be suspicious, not talk too much, not be too friendly and not give away everything who you are straight away. And it also means exactly how it sounds. No sitting next to someone in the buss if there's a possibility to sit alone. (Both, window and aisle seat available.) Not hug perfect strangers. And if forced to talk to someone, do that slightly further than an arms length or from a distance where one can't smell the other person. Always have something in between you and them if forced to be too close. A table, a bag, a child. Any child will do. Or a pet. Just grab a pet. And never look at them in their eyes for too long if they are too close to you.

Wearing dark it typical for colder regions same with dark coloured cars. It does not make me feel depressed. !trdo
So it's sun related. The amount of sunlight is in correlation of the color of clothes and and how weird and crazy the patterns are. Good to know it's not just a spurious correlation like Nicolas Cage movies and people drowning in pools. https://www.tylervigen.com/spurious-correlations
@insaneworks Dark colours keep the warmth and light and white is for the fun. That is why most fridges are still white.
By now I believe dark is also preferred because dirt shows less but I agree it is hard to recognize people if they walk or are on bike dressed up in black. 💕
This made me laugh out loud! Stranger danger, put a child in between you!
Perhaps there were more colourful clothes underneath the black coats. You usually only have one or two coats, so black's a good choice to go with everything.
Happy to make you happy. :)
Desperate situations call for desperate measures.
Erm... Hmm... How is that even possible? :D
thinking hard
Okay so I guess it would be possible if those two coats are both black and as the other one would be a winter coat, then the other one would be for all the seasons left. Spring / summer / fall coat.
I'm trying to imagine myself in that situation and I just can't. I just can't. I mean I have about fiveish coats for winter alone. More for spring / fall seasons. :D
Oh wow, that's a lot of coats! I'd have maybe two for winter, so one can be washed while the other worn. Then maybe small jackets for the warmer months. In England it was pretty much winter all year round, but South Australia basically has two temperatures. Hot and cold.
I never before thought that it's a lot of coats, I just thought that it's practical. One is for really cold weather, I mean -15° to -20°C and below. And the other winter coats, which one I use is more related to what I'm doing or where I'm going. Everyday or sporty.
The spring / fall jackets I have, have more color choices according to mood, but again weather is the biggest influence because in case of photographing, I like to have my hands free, so I very rarely use an umbrella. I rather wear a raincoat or a gore-tex jacket that keeps me dry and even cold wind isn't a problem.
But then again if I lived in Australia, I probably would only have perhaps two coats / jackets because it would be too hot wear a jacket, even in the colder months.
I wonder how many jackets other Finns admit they have? Let's see if I can lure @eveuncovered, @celestal or @tarazkp here to count their jackets / coats. :)
Ah, my favourite topic; clothing. And I happen to be a huge coat/jacket fan, love them so much.
I did a calculation in my head and I own 14 jackets, and my collection is not nearly as full as I would like it to be! You need leather jacket(s), obviously, a wind and rain proof jacket, a trench coat, a proper arctic parka and wool coats too. And of course one would want multiples in different colours and details, and other sub-categories of them all.
:D Yes. This pretty much sums it up. Thank goodness for second hand shops where I've found most of my: "I can manage with my old jackets but because this is so funky or different color than my existing ones, I must have this and oh, it's pretty cheap too!" -jackets.
Lately I've tried to have a bit more minimalism approach in owning stuff. But it's so darn hard when it comes to good jackets findings from flea markets!
Even in England I think the most jackets I ever had was two, maybe three. Except for that time my grandmother kept buying me them from the charity shops and they were to small for me. I was in desperate need of a new coat and could barely squeeze any of them over my jumpers. I think only one actually fit me at that point and I hated it having to go in the wash.
Once you get used to South Australia, a winter jacket is still a must. Even 4°C feels icy, because the climates is so dry here. Having said that, some Aussies are so conditioned to aircon they wear shorts all year round.
4°C is icy. We have that here now (or something around 0°C) and although I think that's not a proper winter degree, it's cold because that's what I've gotten used to.
Shorts!? All year round?! No fun in that because of the lack of different outfit options! :D
Your every images are fantastic.
Thanks!
I am liking the finns more and more, I think I would fit right in with how they think about clothes and people. Oddly I have quite colourful shirts - red, blue, green etc but it is just what happened to be in my closet. You don't seemed to have struggled with light too much, it must be that fancy mirrorless :)
You would make a perfect Finn. Colorful shirt is normal. It can be covered with a coat. And the fact that they just happened to be in your closet. Oh how Finn, such Finn!
Had to choose big ISO so the original photos are a bit grainy. But I dealt with that in post process.
upvoted;
not a great photo captures (poor light and camera to blame, not your eye!) but very cool topic, observation, and especially comments section.
i consider it can be a game for two, while walking in Finland during the wintertime - who will see 1st, and count more non-grey/ black coats.
personally, I have got a few coats thru the recent 10 years, which I didnt throw away, mmm... maybe something about 4. One of them is pretty weared out (it is from 1999 or 2000, could you imagine that?!) but I dont throw it away... actually I wear one of them most of the time, a brown leather one which is pretty weared-out too. got it from a flea market for 1000 roubles.
Perhaps it's the photographer to blame of these not so great photos. :D
I do that too, wear my favourite clothes until they are really worn out.
