Seeing through the walls is already a reality thanks to Artificial Intelligence

in #busy6 years ago

Something only seemed to be possible in the imagination or in science fiction and superhero programs is now a reality. Researchers at MIT have created an Artificial Intelligence (AI) that is able to see through the walls.

This technology was designed to monitor the movements of a person generating images of colorful lines that simulate the displacement of a human being. The interesting thing was that, by testing the AI, the researchers realized that it was able to follow the movements even if a wall imposed itself in front of the target.

The AI is able to do this thanks to the fact that it sends radio waves, imperceptible to the human being, that bounce off the body of the target and allow to create a digital image that allows to detail the movements.

It is this, precisely, the secret behind the "superpower" of technology. Radio waves can generate images even through walls or other solid objects, unless it is a human being versus another.

Although the image is quite basic, since they are only colorful "stick figures" moving, it is very useful to show the activities that the person is doing.

And as MIT researchers know that great power carries great responsibility, they have ensured that the "superpower" of AI is used for good.

This technology has been used to monitor some medical patients, such as those suffering from Parkinson's or multiple sclerosis. It is important to keep records of each of your movements so that doctors can make an accurate diagnosis.

One of the researchers, Dina Katabi, explained a little more about its usefulness:

"We have seen that monitoring the speed of patients walking and the ability to perform basic activities on their own gives health care providers a window into their lives that they did not have before, which could be significant for a range of patients. diseases (...) A key advantage of our approach is that patients do not have to use sensors or remember to charge their devices, "reports FayerWayer.

Artificial Intelligence is also used to care for the elderly without violating their privacy; this way it will be possible to detect unwanted events, such as falls, and attend them as soon as possible.

For now, AI can only create very simple 2D images. But the developers are working so that soon they can change the "stick figures" by more complete images and adapted to reality, so that they can even detect if the hands of an older person are shaking.

Technology advances in sometimes incredible ways, transforming what was believed to be a dream into a reality. This time, he emulated something that we related to a superpower or something typical of a character in a comic. Tomorrow will continue moving forward and creating more things that we only thought existed in our imagination. We just have to remember that now it is up to us, the human beings, to use these new discoveries for good.
