NEED AND IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION

Need and importance of education has been explained by philosophers, scientists and educationists. Following reasons can be enumerated regarding the need and importance of education:-

Child's helplessness

Child is helpless at the time of birth. He needs special training and education. He would die soon if not properly looked after. If it is only through education that he learns to gather food and to protect himself from harm. Thus education is essential for his survival and biological development.

Modification of instincts

Education helps man in the modification of instincts. It helps in utilising his instinctive energy in socially approved and constructive Thus it socializes him and makes him human channels. . Without education he is just like an animal as he expresses his instinctive energy like animals.

Special capacity for learning

Man is said to be the crown of all creation as he is gifted with special capacity for learning. He possesses the capacity for reason. imagination, memory, judgement and such other potentialities. Education helps in the development of these powers and potentialities. Without eduction these powers and potentialities will remain undeveloped.

Plasticity of a child's mind

The child's mind is very plastic and impressionable during the earlier years. He is not acquainted with the world around him as well as his own powers. Education makes hm acquainted with his powers and the environment. Hence education should be given from the very beginning.

Satisfaction of social needs

Besides biological needs like food, water, clothes and sex, there are also some social needs of man. He wants respect from society. He aspires to live a contented and rich life.There may be many methods and sources for the fulfilment of these needs. Education gives him a knowledge of the suitability of a particular method for the satisfaction of these needs. A Sanskrit verse tells us that education removes the dullness, makes our speech truthful, increases our respect, keeps us away from sin, pleases us and spreads our reputation in all directions. What does education not do like 'Kalpavriksha'.

Means of living

Education is a means of living. It helps the individual to earn his livelihood and stand on one's own feet.

Character and personality

Education plays an important role in moulding characters including instincts, emotions, sentiments, habits and personality-physical, intellectual, emotional, social, moral and aesthetic aspects of personality. Yajna Valka holds that education makes a man of good character and useful for the world. Education helps in developing body, mind and spirit.It helps the student achieve all the beauty and all the perfections to which he is competent in both his body and his soul.

Third eye

In ancient India, education was considered the 'third eye' of man which gives him an insight into all affairs and teaches him how to act, leading us to salvation, in the mundane sphere. It helps us advance and develop globally. The light that Vidya (education) shines upon us dispels delusion, eliminates obstacles, and helps us see the true worth of life. It is more accurate to say that someone who lacks the light of education is blind.The correct insight, which we get from education, naturally increases our intelligence, power and efficiency.

Basis of good life

Education provides the basis for a good life. Education is the only process which modifies human behaviour according to the needs of society to ensure the progress and development of the community and the nation.

Training for leadership

Education provides training for leadership. No nation can make progress without good leaders. Good leaders are needed in every field like politics, industry, social service and religion for the essential development of the country.

Diverse importance

The need, importance and uses of education are too diverse to be enumerated exhaustively. It provides for us like a mother, leads us in the right direction like a father, and comforts and satisfies us like a wife. We become more famous, pure, and refined as a result. When we are in the solitude of a journey, or of a foreign country, it serves us as a valued companion.

Thus education is essential for the development of innate potentialities, satisfaction of social needs as well as transmission and enrichment of culture and civilization. A poet has regarded education as a protection, a well-wisher and pleasant like mother, father and wife respectively. Education is very much needed and important for the progress of an individual, society and the nation.
