The Sun Rose On A Beautiful Day
The sun rose on a beautiful day
Shining his glorious light upon the earth
Illuminating the grandeur and beauty of the world
That all may enjoy it for themselves
Rising, rising, he went
To the pinnacle of the heavens
The noontime came and with it a meal
And with it they gave thanks to Demeter
Goddess of the grain from which the bread was made
And there upon a plate were set her offerings
Delighting, delighting, they ate
To fuel their toil in her sacred fields
The sun sank toward the Western horizon
Elongating the shadows on the afternoon
Creating shades of umber and red
Where the gates were open for his arrival
Sinking, sinking, he went
Toward the waiting sunset
The evening came and with it drink
And they tipped over a share to the earth
In thanks to Dionysus the twice born
Who brought forth the vine and the grape
Singing, singing, they reveled
To the rhythms of the drunk
The sun disappeared into the world below
Leaving the world in darkness
Into which the stars in the heavens shone
And the Moon was made guardian of the night
Sleeping, sleeping, they rested
Mortal man and his companions
Art: Aurora, ceiling fresco by Guido Reni, 1613–14
