Crafting Retro Hong Kong-Inspired Graphics for Speakeasy Bar

Lately I’ve enjoyed the challenge of using graphic skills to support a newly opened Da Nang speakeasy bar called Kong 72. Channeling vintage Hong Kong Visuals for their social media graphics allows testing creative boundaries - when not intimately familiar with a aesthetic, you must get inventive! Thus far the client has appreciated these images’ style.
Kong 72 features a luxe, exotic look from another era. Dark woods, ornate lamps and gold accents craft an intimate, romantic atmosphere. As their designer lacking links to Hong Kong personally, I felt some intimidation initially on how to authentically capture their distinctive vibe.
But diving into retro Hong Kong visual research revealed patterns, color combos, fonts and motifs pointing the way. Geometric Art Deco outlines, crimson with metallic golds and deep jades, Chinese landscape brushwork, paper lantern lighting - elements that slowly immersed me in Kong 72’s intended old Cathay fantasy.
I started manipulating photos of their swanky interior using filters and textures to embed date-stamped nostalgia within. Adding elements like postmarked borders, customized signage, cursive script created visually captivating, storytelling environments. The client responded very favorably, urging bolder retro experiments.
While intimidating leaping into fresh aesthetic territory, the graphics thus far boost creativity and skills for future work.
