The Mystery Of The Anasazi Has Been Solved(They Think).
Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!
This is one of the last posts in my series about the cliff dwellers in the 4 Corners region of Southwestern United States.
If you haven't been reading this series, the great mystery is why the villages and cliff dwellings were abandoned around 1285 A.D.
One of the incredible cliff dwellings, almost perfectly preserved:
In my last post on the Anasazi, now known as the Ancestral Puebloans, we learned that a severe drought wasn't the only catastrophe they suffered through.
Within the last ten years archaeologists and anthropologists have been doing extensive excavating.
No one expected this
What they found was shocking to them. Hundreds of skeletal remains with their skulls bashed in. Up until this time they had no reason to believe that the puebloans were violent.
Now they could see a reason for them to abandon their ancestral homes, they were attacked ...but by who?
Another hard to reach home:

Well, there was no evidence found which indicated another race or culture was there. An enemy big enough to force the evacuation of 30,000 people would leave significant evidence behind.
Instead...nothing. Which leaves only one possibility. They had to have been fighting each other. For some reason the settlements turned on themselves.
Something evil this way comes
It was only in the last generation that they moved into walled villages and built cliff dwellings. It was a move of desperation in fear of a great threat. But now we know that the threat was each other.
And those defensive measures didn't stop the fighting.
In the Castle Rock settlement when they had only dug up 5% of the area they found 41 bodies that died a violent death...the site of a major massacre.
And that was one of the most secure dwellings:
Researchers know that the fighting got really bad and they assume that the drought and resulting food shortages were a major reason, maybe they were raiding each other for food or maybe it was some other type of disagreements.
The writers at the Smithsonian Institute believe that the tribal elders of the Hopi and Zuni know the answers as their history has always been passed down from generation to generation in their oral traditions. But they aren't talking.
We'll find out more in the next post.
Thanks for reading folks!

PS- Everyday I've been posting a photo which supposedly represents each state, this is from a ridiculous article I found on www.livingmgz.com. lol.
Today's state is the great state of Georgia! I know a Steemian in Georgia, the great sir @jerrytsuseer. He's a prolific poster and has a heart as big as his state, get aquainted if you haven't yet.
This is a great photo. No way it represents the state but none the less, I know they have a great many rednecks over there and that's what's important to me! lol.
Peaches are the state fruit and man oh man! If you haven't had Georgia peaches then you haven't quite lived yet! Oh, the state motto of Georgia is: “Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation”
Yeah, I don't know if they follow any of those in redneck country where this picture was taken! No mention of education in their motto. lol.
God bless you all!

Well, if you are starving, it's usually too late to attack your better-off neighbours, unless your numbers are much much greater.
So, perhaps food shortages are to blame for the last wave of extreme violence, starvation probably not so much.
Once the food shortages become too bad & there are no neighbours left to attack & steal from, they move away (if they can).
"Up until this time they had no reason to believe that the puebloans were violent."
Sounds like they haven't met any humans yet. For, there is no reason to believe that homo sapiens ever has been non-violent.
haha! Howdy there bossel! yes, very good point about not having met any humans! lol. So true and sad. We have always been violent.
Where is Patras? Are you Chinese? Thanks so much for reading and for your great comment!
Hi!
German living in Patras, which is in Greece. But before I moved here, I worked 11 years in China. & before that I already had Chinese friends. Hence my interest in China.
Howdy again bossel! oh, that is very interesting, what kind of work did you do in China? That means you speak the language which I've always heard is the hardest to learn of any language.
Hi!
I worked as a teacher, first English, later German.
& nope, I don't speak Chinese. Tried to learn it, but I can't cope with the tones. So, when I had to speak that was mostly one sentence: Don't understand. (Ting bu dong.)
Chinese as such is actually very simple. But if you're as unmusical as I am, it's impossible to learn.
Howdy again sir bossel! oh wow, I knew that they had different meanings for different tones but I didn't realize that you had to be musical. I'd never get it either because I'm tone deaf.
well that is very impressive. How many languages do you speak?
Hi!
Well, I at least could never get the hang of the tones. Maybe I'm just too stupid.
Languages? Only 3 fluently: German, Dutch, English
Learned French at middle school, but forgot most of it. Didn't bother to learn Greek, since I quickly decided that I would move away again as soon as possible. Greece is too expensive.
Oh, only three languages! lol. that's amazing to me. I wish they would teach us more than one language here in America. Greece is expensive because they are trying to raise money to pay off their debt?
If they fought amongst themselves, and some lost and were killed, why do the victors need to leave? I believe there is more than meets the eye - or in this case more than what the researchers know or reveal. But what do I know right?
You are so right sir Vincent! What do you know indeed. lol. Well, it wasn't the victors who left, it was the survivors. No one knows for sure..well maybe the tribal elders...but my guess is that people were sick of all the fighting and figured the only way to live was to run away so that's what they did. I'm guessing many decided to stop fighting and leave together and start fresh somewhere else, because that's what they did.
Even the victors must have left when all their meal tickets were gone!
You guessed. So, it must be. Well done! Yup, you sure know a lot more than I do. lol
well, maybe about this tiny niche topic. But you have a whole world of knowledge that I know nothing about. like traveling around the world, and Spain and bar-tending!
If your family is starving to death and there is food at your neighbors it would explain how that might happen.
I like 'peches'. Most of ours come from Michigan.
lol..I like peches too..I bet the ones from Michigan are pretty good too!
Yes I think starvation was one of the main causes of the fighting.
Loved my trip to Mesa Verde. The dwellings there are amazing. This makes complete sense on how they 'disappeared.' I wonder why the tribes won't say anything to confirm or deny.
It was funny how I learned about the Anasazi. My ex-husband's Boy Scout troop had given themselves the name after a jamboree. It wasn't until we went to visit my mom when she was in New Mexico that we found out it didn't mean what he had thought it meant.
Howdy tryskele! oh I'd love to go visit Mesa Verde, in the fall or winter. lol. That's interesting how you found out about the name too! So good to hear from you, thanks for commenting!
Did you not speak of a cannibal tribe in the Herman story.?
Could that be a possibility...?
I watched a Kurt Russell western awhile back that had cannibal cave dweller indians in it.

Wow, Kurt Russell is one of my favorite actors. I haven't heard about this one. Tomorrow's post explains alot more. lol. Great guess and I bet that's where they got part of the idea for the movie.
Hi jonboy, well I did not see that coming - it happens and it must have been very scary for those people.
I love peaches so maybe one day I will enjoy eating one in Georgia, you never know.
Howdy angiemitchell! yes, I think it was terrifying for them. They were all skilled climbers so they couldn't keep them out!
You might have to make a special trip over here in peach season!
Haha, sounds like a plan. I will have to look at a map to see the position of Georgia in the US.
Howdy today angiemitchell! yes, and you could go in May or June before it gets real hot and humid, although I know you are used to those conditions. Their season starts in May though and goes through August.
Wow! Cowboy, that revelation was a surprise- to kill each other.
Are there a lot of French speaking people in Georgia? Maybe just an spelling error but pêches is the French spelling of peaches.
lol! howdy redheadpei! I'm not laughing at your comment about the anasazi but about the spelling. I highly doubt it about the spelling but that is a brilliant point that it would be correct if they were French, very good!
But my bet is on the fact that these were some country rednecks who were trying to spell peaches! lol.
Howdy Sir @janton, what a revelation.
So they were their own worst enemies.
Those mass killings speaks of disunity between internal clans or families?
At Massada everyone was united and the last survivors committed suicide.
No one will commit suicide by having their heads bashed in.
Could the different dwellings that were built here perhaps give a better clue to my theory of disunity?
Blessings!
Howdy sir papilloncharity! Yes they don't know for certain but it looks like different clans or villages went against each other.

It’s the impact of the returned solar minimum every 400 years!
Howdy sir kaminchan! What is the impact, the drought?
Yap! That cycle happened to affect several civilizations around the world! The downfall of the Chinese dynasty, the disappearing of people’s tribes and cities in old Thailand and Cambodia.
The scary thing is the big cycle of solar minimum, the grand one which will produce more serious impact!
There will be huge migration of people in the northern hemisphere towards the Equator! Billions of people will die from hunger and sickness in the next thirty years!
The really serious impact that will cause panic worldwide will start in two years.
So, one should make some contingency plans!
Howdy sir kaminchan! thanks for all the information, have you made contingency plans?
Yes, I have started to make some plans! But I need more hands on the deck! Some of my friends are slowly seeing things my way and they realize they have to do something to survive the next ten difficult years!
Crops are already failing in China and Thailand this year! Drought comes suddenly in three towns here! People are going to lose their wealth without warning!!
Crazy politicians, they are so stupid and still playing for power! Their families will suffer badly when money cannot buy food because there is not enough food!
Venezuela is a good pilot project by the cabal to see what would happen to society in time is scarcity!
