Ida // Film Review
Before I give you a summary of the story, I must notify you that it is shot in black and white. A lot of people don't like black and white movies. The reason? Some say it's a matter of taste, but whoever has a passion for the seventh art, whether a film is in B&W or colour, is the least of it.
The film by director Pawel Pawlikowski was made in the 1960s. An 18-year-old girl, who was raised in a convent, is about to receive her vows to become a nun. The Mother Superior grants her permission to visit a living relative who has been located. She decides to visit this relative she has never seen before giving herself completely to the work of her Lord God. The relative is an aunt, a lawyer who is a judge. That's when she learns that her parents were Jewish. He begins, together with his newly-acquainted aunt, a journey through a part of post-war Europe, to meet his past, his history and to find out what really happened to his parents...
Both women embark on a small road movie, discovering painful facts and we, the viewers, see the wounds that were still open in those years, but that were hidden with shame, by the survivors of the German occupation.
The images possess beauty and strength, thanks to the director's decision to use black and white to tell us this beautiful story. The narrative becomes more attractive. Moreover, on that impromptu journey in search of her roots, Ida will discover a new feeling, something wonderful for her, that she has never known before: earthly love. But, like every great story, she will eventually find herself at a difficult crossroads. Having to choose between leading a normal life, she now knows that she is Jewish and is not forced to remain Catholic. Or, on the contrary, to go the way she had already decided before she met her aunt. She owes her loyalty to the religion that kept her from dying during the war.
Polish actress Agata Trzebuchowska made her big-screen debut as Ida. Achieving a very subtle character but full of depth. She brought with her eyes and her wonderful silences the strength and naivety that she deserved. He hasn't shot a new film, he has dedicated himself mostly to the theatre of his country and has participated only in a few short films. A great actress, I hope one day she decides to return to film.
