My Family's source of income
Seaweeds selling and harvesting is one of the livelihoods in the Island of Bohol, especially if they are living near the coastal areas. And we are one of them.
My Papa Harvested Seaweeds while Mama Sells Seaweeds in the Market. When I was still in highschool I used to go to the market to help mama, I just stopped upon entering college because of hectic schedules
This weird seaweed that looks like small grapes is called lato or caulerpa lentillifera. It’s very popular in the Philippines
If you walk around the stalls of the market in Manga District Tagbilaran City, you’ll certainly see the stall of my mother she is known there as "Huling" and you'll also see this strange seaweed (Lato) it looks funny. It’s not obvious at first sight, but it’s delicious.
We will then prepare small bags of 1 kg of lato that will be sold 15 pesos
In preparing One small red onion, two mini tomatoes, some cane vinegar and pinch of salt, you're know ready to prepare a nice traditional salad.
It’s very simple. You just need to cut the lato bunches and to put them on a plate. Then you add the onion and tomatoes, finely chopped. Add some vinegar and salt, and it’s done, you have the perfect ensaladang lato. You will feel the bulbs pop in your mouth as you eat it, which makes it really fun to eat. It’s also refreshing and healthy.
Don’t wait for too long after pouring the seasoning on it, as it will become mushy very quickly.
Til now mama sells those fresh produce from the sea. It seems she will continue doing so until God permits.
To Mama and Papa! For being selfless, for sending us to school, for working hard up to this day, for everything you've done for us - Thank you. Just stay healthy and happy.
