Its armor is a small blade covered with a certain number of hard rings that can go from 5 to 9 depending on the species. This shell covers the top of your head and your back. As they lack skin, they can not withstand very low temperatures, which is why they are found in areas of warm temperatures.
Normally they close to sleep, or defend against a danger, although it is not customary to find a closed armadillo
It is an animal of nocturnal habits, very elusive and shy is guided by the sense of smell, and the acute sense of hearing. During the day it remains in its burrow, excavated in the ground at medium depth, and at night it ventures in the open field to hunt insects and larvae, from which it feeds, since despite having around 32 teeth, they can not bite or chew, because they lack the roots and tooth enamel.
It inhabits caves, hollows, pastures, tropical forests and a wide variety of dry areas. Although it seems more common in humid areas, burrows under the earth which dig with their claws.
In Venezuela, they can be found in the Cordillera de la Costa and Los Andes, Lara, Yaracuy and the south of the Orinoco, in the states of Bolívar and Amazonas.
Although in Venezuela we have five species of cachicamos (sabanero, mountaineer cachicamo, nine-banded cachicamo, cuspa and cuspón), this animal is currently in danger of extinction, as well as in other countries of the Americas. , the product of indiscriminate hunting and the destruction of its habitat
Jacinto Convit the renowned Venezuelan doctor and scientist who inoculated the leprosy bacillus in cachicamos or armadillos of the family Dasypodidae obtained the Mycobacterium leprae and when combined with the BCG (tuberculosis vaccine), produced the vaccine.
Leprosy, according to the definition of the World Health Organization, is a chronic infectious disease caused by the bacillus Mycobacterium leprae that mainly affects the skin, the peripheral nerves, the mucosa of the upper respiratory tract and the eyes.
The disease tends to multiply gradually, being the average incubation period of five years, although in some cases the symptoms may appear in a year, or take up to 20 years.
Failure to treat yourself in time can cause severe, progressive and permanent skin, nerve, limb and eye injuries. Symptoms of leprosy range from discoloration lesions or nodules to diminished skin sensitivity.
