Teenagers Today

Every individual including teenagers, has the right and freedom to express feelings, ideas, and opinions; choose which path to follow; right to their own beliefs, and in decision-making. But a great responsibility should come along with this right. Everyone should practice not just a mere decision-making but a responsible one, that is knowing right from wrong and taking considerations on the possible consequences ahead.

Teenagers now where more sexually active and has been ver licentious in their actions. This has been one of the reason why teenage pregnancy has been one of the most rampant problem in the society. This phenomena has many contributing factors. Teenagers today are more exposed to sexual temptations. Due to too much curiosity and being fun to experiments, most teenagers indulged themselves to some vices like drinking alcohol, night-outs, and even substance abuse. Peer influence often lead them to have intimate relationship and engage in sexual intercourse at a young age without even knowing the consequences.

Our environment also has been strafed with different sexually oriented materials. There were lots of pornographic magazines, comics, books, and also novels having sensual stories.
Media also has a role in the growth of a certain individual. There are TV channels showing some sexy and sensual movies and of course the pornographic websites in internet especially this so-called "cyber sex". In situations like this, parents or guardians must play their role, a crucial role to their children. Parents should be the front liners in giving guidance and support. They must guide their children to what is right and wrong and along with this guidance is giving them some options, good options for a better future. They don't have to be very strict nor very lenient. They just have to be open-minded and willing to listen and understand because mostly at this age children were actually facing some obstacles that are part of their grown up process. The family should be a foundation of good values. Living in this kind of environment will not urge teenagers to do wrong decisions in life. If love and care has been felt inside the family, they will not be looking it from anybody else.

In this teenage pregnancy, the problem is not only on the young mother but also to the child. In most cases, due to pregnancy, the teenager will not be able to finish her studies. Let's just say that she's a highschool undergraduate, she will then be having difficult time in finding a job. This would eventually caused stress to her and without knowing the baby has been affected. The pregnant mother will be stressed out due to too much fear, doubts and confusions. As an effect of being young, most of them doesn't know how to take care of themselves, thus affecting their unborn child.

There were some young mothers especially those who were out of wedlock, became depressed with their situation and in worst cases they committed abortion. A problem was only added with another one. Misconceptions about love was also one of the reason why teenagers committed intimate things. Most youth cannot control their emotions. They thought that one of the basis
for love is by doing such thing which is very wrong. Sexual intercourse is never a basis.

This issue in our society has been disturbing us for quite so long. Yes, it may not be totally eradicated but for sure there are ways on how to lessen it. Communities and families should work hand in hand to help our youth out from this dilemma. Parents should be in the topmost. Their role to their children must be played. It's very crucial. A supportive family and a harmonious home is always essential for every growing teenagers. It will help them to be at ease and secured. Good values should be planted first at home so that there's no such peer influences, bad influences that will affect them. The government through some agencies like Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Department of Education (DepEd) should introduce some strategies that will be useful for this problem. Proper sex education must be taught to the students of the right level and also to the out of school youths. Ways of family planning can also be a big help to those young couples. Spiritual support is also important so that teenager's attention will be diverted. Most of all the proper guidance and support from a family is the most important.

Everybody should be responsible in all we do. Let us think of all the consequences in the future. It's important not to forget that every right implies a responsibility.
