Steemit Is In Danger Of Self Destruction. Why ReddCoin Could Win
Steemit Is In Danger Of Self Destruction. Why ReddCoin Could Win
So Steemit, hello! How ya doing? “Great!” you say!
Meanwhile you think, "I don’t know about that….." and give it dubious look up and down
I’m pretty sure that’s the reaction of 99% of newcomers to Steemit have.
Steemit has been so hyped up by alt-media cult leaders and anarchist crusaders. Your expectations are set so high, and then you see this…(and it’s even worse on mobile)
And you wonder if you have made a wrong turn to El Dorado? Instead you have landed in this cavernous abyss.
Does anyone else feel lonely here? It’s enough to make you want to run back to Stalkbook or CensorTube.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the idea of Steemit. Especially with Fakestream shutting off monetization to anyone on their alt media hit list. But, let’s just say there was no spark of love at hello.
And I reckon that is where the majority of visitors would call it quits.
Let’s Admit It
We are here because we want to make a quick dollar or two. If it weren’t for that we wouldn’t be here.
Our friends aren’t here to follow. Our favourite news sites aren’t here. The only ones here are crypto junkies, other oddballs, and voyeurs.
How many non-fringe interest contributors are on here? Are their followers on here? How will they move across?
Sorry to burst your bubble but young miss 20 something, with a large disposable income is too busy making a flat lay of her latest shopping haul elsewhere.
But before you protest, because I know you want to, let me bring in ‘exhibit A’. Below is a Google Trends report showing 90 days of ‘Steemit’ searches.
Nope, those related search queries and regions don’t look very mainstream to me.
What It All Boils Down To?
Steemit is not at all geared at the mainstream user. It’s not something you stumble upon and go “Cool, let’s give it a crack”.
Heck, even linking a profile picture took me 20 mins on my second attempt from a desktop (my initial mobile attempt failed due to CBF with the extreme difficulty of finding a linkable online image of myself).
Let's not even get started on the Markdown post editor. You have to be comfortable with the concept of manually formatting your post in a html style language.
The user interface needs to advance pronto if anyone normal is going to take Steemit seriously.
A guided interactive induction and populated feed by interest area would go a long way to making people feel welcome.
But that’s just the first of many barriers.
Will It Become a Goldmine or a Smouldering Coal Pit?
In the end, whether the platform succeeds depends on the community. The problem I see is that self-serving greed could ruin it for everyone.
While the upvote and reward system sounds great in theory, it can be abused – leading to a poor, spammy content and harassment that’s not going to attract the kind of people you want to net.
As a professional digital marker, I am painfully aware of how quickly people learn to game the system for their own benefit.
That’s why Facebook censorship started…before they took it too far. It was an effort to drown bad content and click bait.
The problem here is, the cornerstone of this platform is decentralization. Once content is created, it can’t be deleted. It lives permanently on the blockchain, not to mention Steemit doesn’t give you a delete option to at least hide your posts.
Sure, it can get downvoted by the community…but who’s going to do that when it seems the majorities want to keep the wheels spinning on this gravy train. Essentially, Steemit has a spam problem and zero tools to fight it.
What’s The Alternative?
ReddCoin, although nowhere near as advanced is making progress. In case you are not aware some major plugins and integrations are expected to launch this year. This will allow followers to donate small amounts to content creators across many platforms, and reward good content.
Instead of attempting to take mainstream social media head on, it’s looking to complement it. I can see lot of content creators adopting ReddCoin much quicker than migrating to Steemit.
For one, you don’t need to leave all your friends and followers behind. And two, as monetization is being shut down on YouTube, some contributors will be left almost no other option but to rely on the support of their fans.
Unlike Steemit’s reward system, which can be manipulated, ReddCoin can’t. It relies on someone parting with value, and handing it over to someone else. That is a powerful motivation for creating kick ass content.
This could even spur an ‘free’ content revival. Lead magnets and subscription funnels could go the way of the dinosaurs.
The way I see it, tinker with Steemit if you must but start thinking about how you can put ReddCoin to use soon.
ReddCoin may be on the slow boil but that doesn't mean it has failed. ReddCoin is just preparing to run the marathon, meanwhile Steemit is exhausting itself on the sprint.
Anyway, I am putting my money where my mouth is. I'm holding ReddCoin for the long term.
But I'm also going to stick around long enough here to have a sticky beak...and maybe make some coin along the way. After all a gal's got to make do.
PS. No apologies given for my whacky spelling (decentraliZation) I am from Australia, and we did descend from convicts after all.
You put my thoughts in words much better than I would (apart from the REDD coin that I'm gonna check now). It's exactly how I felt. It's so hard to find any good content here and after 2-3 weeks of searching, I've managed to find ONE person that it makes sense to interact with. I'm very hesitant to spend too much time here, because I believe that I may get much larger relevant audience when I invest that time even to my own blog (+Medium, Quora, and maybe something else).
This is one of the few good posts that I read here and hopefully not the last one.
As you rightly mentioned it is very difficult to find good authors and posts in the beginning. After two months I have started following some interesting people and my feed is getting better. Steemit is only as good as your feed. You can check out the people I follow on https://steemit.com/@gokulnk/followed I should clean up the list this weekend though ;)
Thank you! I'll check it after the weekend then :)
Thank you :). I'm going to stick around here for a while and see how it works out....but mostly just out of curiosity. I'm interested in the practical applications of blockchain so I will be probably posting more things along these lines.
Same here, let's see how it goes.
Good tips however steemit works for those who understand the platform and know how to play the game. The low steem price is great for now because it gives new members the opportunity to buy cheap steem and power up. Price will certainly go up by year end and will continue in upward trend due to the great things in steem ecosystem-pls see my former posts for details and strategy to employ in order to be a success here. I am also somewhat new (started June this year) but I have seen success.
I do not know red coin and will like to get more info because am open to new things. Following you now in order to stay in touch and send in my support. I wish you success.
Hi thanks for the follow :) I'll make sure to read your posts. Having worked for years in digital marketing I would be a fool not to get my hands dirty and give Steemit a go. Already it seems like a whole new paradigm but I think it will challenge me to become a better marketer as I learn things here. It looks like the first thing to do is buy some Steem. How much would you recommend?
I recommend you to see my new posts and older posts too. I outlined all ponts there including investing in steem and tips for success. Take out your time and lear..do not forget to follow me and stay in touch. Happy weekend
I'm going to try the one month delegation offered here I think.

I agree with your assessment, well done sir.
welcome, thanks for your comment
Here's what I'm doing:
This is because
My goal is to grow my sp as fast as I can without investing - I have no money to invest and will take the sbd as I need to.
That's about what I've got now. I'm gathering steemers on Twitter - join me and you will get on the steemer twitlist - I'm good over there and working it. Steemit posts do really well and I have 55+ stemmers on my list so far.
I saw you somewhere today - I'm delirious and need to get to sleep. But let's connect everywhere. Search fitinfun anywhere and it is all me. I've been at this crazy game about 7 years now. Why oh why?
Congratulations! This post has been upvoted from the communal account, @minnowsupport, by Joanna Jablonka from the Minnow Support Project. It's a witness project run by aggroed, ausbitbank, teamsteem, theprophet0, someguy123, neoxian, followbtcnews/crimsonclad, and netuoso. The goal is to help Steemit grow by supporting Minnows and creating a social network. Please find us in the Peace, Abundance, and Liberty Network (PALnet) Discord Channel. It's a completely public and open space to all members of the Steemit community who voluntarily choose to be there.
Cheers
Some interesting observations here. I hadn't heard of reddcoin.
There's a group of us, #teamaustralia that's worth a look.
The problems of spam and self upvoting have solutions, it's just a question of how the developers want to tackle them.
We need to remember that steemit is still in beta, and there's a good chance the devs don't want to grow too quickly (this is fraught with danger).
We're the rats in the maze at the moment.
Yes, it could be a lot more straightforward, but then what would the observers learn?
Following you.
Thanks Matt. Good points too! Followed back and I read your post about using reputation score to filter people who can comment. Genius! :)

While I have my fair share of complaints about Steemit, I am upbeat about steemit.
Reddcoin seems interesting. Tipping in social media and being the currency for social media seems promising. Will check it out further.
This is an honest question - how is Reddcoin different than older systems like Flattr or ChangeTip?
I'm not sure, I haven't heard of those. However ReddCoins market cap is around $30m at the moment so there is a fair bit of investor confidence in them. Having said that the price has also dropped significantly from its all time high but it seems steady now. Just the concept seems more scalable in the long term. Another consideration is that I don't think there is anything to stop someone developing a bitcoin or lightcoin tipoing mechanism instead which could compete. I'm just sharing some ideas and looking to hear yours back :)
Flattr is a way to tip people for their content, embeddable via javascript widget. It doesn't use cryptocurrency as a backing though (also not sure if it's still around, TBH). ChangeTip was similar, allowing people to tip each other via Twitter, Github comment, blog comments, etc, and was backed by Bitcoin. But they shut down. :(
Now you broke my heart :-( I used to hold a Million REDD and sold them off after a couple of years. Just another could have been rich story down the drain LOL
Cheers
If it's any comfort you're not the only one. I considered putting $2k into bitcoin in 2015....but I couldn't access the Wallet details, so I put the idea in the too hard basket and forgot. I never did end up finding those wallet details. The thought of those bitcoins brings me to tears! ReddCoin is really low now. Could be a great time to buy back in?
I'd have to check my account, but I'm pretty sure I bought 1 Million Redd around 5 sat give or take sold around 7 for casino coin Doh :-(
Hi @joannajablonka great post.
I agree linking our profile pictures and all is not straight forward will be hectic for the newbies even i am.But we should undestand that its just in the beta stage lot more yet to come down the line i hope sure they will address these issues very soon.
We can get quality content by following such bloggers so that we can avoid unquality content from displaying in our home feeds.
I agree there are lots of blogs getting posted here so it will be difficult for the quality content writers being unnoticed so everyone have to overcome that bitter experience without giving up. we will be rewarded later point of time.
We can use the editor option instead of Markdown style while creating the new blogs just like we use in the word. we cannot use the same while writing comments on others blogs.
Thansk for letting us know about the Reddcoin
This is just my point of view on your bolg. I'm following you to know about other best informative blogs from you thanks a lot for your post.
Happy Steeming
Hi thanks for the comment. I will need to look into the editor option. I can't remember seeing it.
You can right click your twitter pic in here for your profile or Pinterest - not hard.
