You're the One
The bar is dimly lit—the tables, wooden barrels painted black—aiming for chic, and missing, but hitting shabby.
And there she is—honey coloured hair swept up, in a black sheath dress and breathtakingly lovely.
Nothing redeems this tawdry bar but her, and her magic. When she sings, the waiters stop and listen—and my heart stops with them. She spins silvery notes out of nothingness and makes a mystery out of gloom.
Her set's over, and she sits down beside me. “So, you’re back—a glutton for punishment, huh?”
“Look, Kenzie—I didn’t mean anything the other night by my offer—just wanted to help you get started that’s all.”
"Uh, huh." The corners of her mouth are turned down.
“I’m sure it’s common for famous songwriters to do charity work in bars," she chuckles, "you know, help out struggling young artists? Yeah, I’m sure that happens all the time.”
“It’s not like that—there are no strings attached. Honest.”
Her eyes are moist. “You know, I almost believe you—but I get the papers, and don’t just read the comics.”
I feel myself shaking. “You know what gets left out of those articles? The misery and pain. But I guess that doesn’t make good copy—everyone judging me because of my past.”
“So, you’re saying you’re not like that now?”
I take a deep breath. “All I’m asking is you give me a chance. Look, there’s a cocktail party before The Juno’s next week—let me introduce you to my agent and some of the music producers. It won’t hurt, and it might seriously help your career.”
“So, no strings?”
“No strings,” I repeat. “If I don’t keep my word, then don’t see me again.”
“I’m not seeing you now,” she reminds me.
She gets up and hands me a business card.
“What’s this?”
“My email address. Send me the details, and I’ll meet you there.”
“You mean, I can’t escort you?”
“Don’t push it.” The line of her mouth is firm.
I shrug. “I guess I’ll meet you there.”
I watch her walk away and feel the loneliness return.
It’s a helpless feeling when you’re the victim of an image—harder still, when you know it’s justly deserved.
