Hello friends of Recreative Steem, I am glad to always write in this community. And I love writing about how I spent my day. Last week Friday, I traveled to the village for my grandmother's funeral which was slated for Saturday, 1st march 2025.

Funeral in Nigeria is different from the concept of other countries. There are a lot of rites to be followed here in Nigeria. In Nigeria, there is always food and drinks at funerals. No matter how painful the death might be, there will always be food for the living.

And sometimes, if it is the burial of a way older person, there will always be a 'celebration of life' kind of funeral.

This was no different for my Grandmother who was quite very old. She has up to great-grandchildren who are above the age of 18. So it was more of a celebration of a great woman who had lived.

We woke up very early after the Friday's vigil. It was a great night, as family members comes back from far and near. Always an opportunity to meet extended families which we've never seen before.

So that was the essence of the Vigil. On Saturday we woke up to help out with the preparation for the day. We used a live band, so by morning, the sound system was being set by my Brother, he was in charge of the sound system.

Then I went inside to inspect some of the cooking done at the backyard. Rice was being parboiled, afang leaf was pounded and other kitchen activities. I helped out with some activities too while actively making sure the place was fun to be in.

Soon I got caught up with my family members who were going to the stream and I had to join them. I so much needed the early morning bath. So we took a stroll down to the stream which was a long walk away from our house. Well since it was in a group , we were chatting all along the way.

We got to the stream and had a great bathe while playing in there. Soon we were called that we should rush back to the compound, we had lost track of time, so we had to run back home.

The corpse was brought in from the mortuary and was placed in the house. Soon the funeral started with some prayers and then Lying in state was proceeded. Everyone took a walk around the corpse before the funeral proper took place.

The minister of God talked to everyone admonishing us that we will all die. This came as a wake-up call that we don't have enough time on earth. And we should try to live right and impact our society positively.

We had a time to celebrate and dance as grandchildren and children of the deceased. Then she was laid to rest as we all watched. This funeral reminded me that there is nothing to life...To the dust we will all go back to.

It was time to take care of our guests who might have been hungry or stressed out. We served food and also ate and had a great time discussing...it was all mixed feelings for us, because we won't see our grandmother anymore. Some of us shared memories of her as we all had the nostalgic feeling of losing a loved one.

Well we took pictures too...a whole lot of them.

And in the evening we went again to the stream, this time around we were more. We jammed to some music, played in the stream and enjoyed ourselves.

I met some beautiful kids too in the stream. And took pictures with them. We stayed beyond our time in the stream and mom had to call on us to come back so we can travel back home.

We ran back as if we were chased with our heels touching our heads. We arrived home, parked our things and then boarded a bus back home.
We were all tired and worn out, so we just slept the moment we got home.

It was a great day but of mixed emotions to us. We were relieved that she was laid to rest and that was how I spent my day.
