Herbarium, Saffron (#club100)

in WORLD OF XPILARlast year

Saffron is grown primarily for the spice obtained from the dried stigmas of its flowers. It is one of the most expensive spices in the world due to the fact that it takes a large number of flowers to produce a small quantity.
The spice is used in a wide range of dishes to add flavour and colour, especially in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine.

The pages of your album are designed in the same style and are very attractive. I have several herbalists with drawings of plants, but there are very simple drawings in the style of graphics.

If it's not a secret that you take your drawings as a basis, what is the primary source? After all, you have to see either the plant itself or its image.

I am a little fond of herbs and mushrooms, this question is interesting to me.

Hi Bambuka! Glad to see you again and thanks so much for your interest and for your support.

These drawings are the consequence of a long journey of several months of research and study as I did before, a few years ago but in very little quantity with mushrooms and human anatomy in vintage style. Today my project is more ambitious. I want to reach fifty drawings or paintings, first as posters, then as a book.
My objective has been to collect images of herbs or shrubs that have in common being edible or for medical use or both properties at the same time.
The first step was to make a list of plants that met my goal. Then I selected basic information about them and made a selection of suitable images to be drawn.
As for the drawing style, I decided to do something close to botanical drawings or watercolours but without scientific rigour, since I do not pretend that it is a botanical treatise.
To have a consistent style it was necessary to pay attention to getting the same line style, roughly the same colour palette and texture for all the plants, as well as the use of the same types of brushes and the same paper texture for all the sheets.
The final work of each plant is the result of the combination of direct drawing or painting on paper, then, the use of filters, digital brushes, and photomontage in Photoshop and/or Blender and AI for both the images and the related information.
Fortunately, at present, we have a great window to the world such as the Internet, so it is only necessary to have an interest in doing, searching or learning.

Greetings!

Hello, Jorge
This is a lot of work and I see excellent results. Thank you for such a detailed answer.

You have a very serious approach. It's one thing to draw a picture and quite another - 50 drawings in a single style, realistically authentic, but at the same time each is individual.

It's nice to have such an album in paper form and hold it in your hands.
I wish you success with your project!
