Early in their career, Coldplay's musical style was defined as the dark sound of alternative rock, mainly perceptible on their early Safety EPs, The Blue Room, and their first studio album Parachutes; being compared to that of Radiohead, U2, Travis and Oasis.
However, as time passed, they evolved into a soft pop style.153 The group's singer-songwriter, Chris Martin, once described the group's music as "soft rock" .154 This band's music was rated as "meditative," "romantic," and "reflecting their emotions."
Yellow
Martin explained about the song: "'Yellow' refers to the character of the band. Brightness, hope and devotion." The references in some verses, including those to swimming and the ending, "are metaphorical biases of his emotional devotion." The one-line drawing image refers to Martin's habit of writing lists and underlining the most important of them. The singer commented that the song is about devotion and is directed towards an unrequited love (he was single at the time of writing it). Despite this, many people consider it a happy song, with enormous meaning and a mixture of feelings in each verse.
