The Sleep Over: Day 871: 5 Minute Freewrite: Monday - Prompt: panic

Perfect night for a teen sleepover, Jenn mused, as she readied her overnight case stuffed with pj's, games, extra snacks, and a movie all her friends hadn't yet seen.

She arrived just as the other girls' parents were dropping them off. Excitement was brewing, as this was also the gender reveal weekend for her best friend's oldest sister.

Mrs. Cordera greeted Jenn and the other girls with such a bight, tight hug they felt as if they her children. It was always fun to visit Kaitlyn's home. The smell of baked chocolate chip cookies, beef enchiladas, queso dip, and chicken fajitas was enticing. Not to mention her mom's fabulous taco salad. Jenn could tell they were going to have a fantastic sleepover. Kaitlyn agreed.

Movie in the dvd player, Kaitlyn, Jenn and her friends sat eating their food and playing games until it was time for Kaitlyn to contact her sister for the gender reveal. Her friends were all happy to learn she would be visiting a nephew in a few months.

Settling in for the night, the girls talked for another couple hours, then got ready for bed.

Mrs. Cordera basked in her happiness that she would be a grandmother soon. Her mind swirled with ideas to help plan the nursery and items to purchase. A grandson. She smiled and sang as she cleaned the kitchen, then cleared away other items from the sleepover.

Suddenly Mrs. Cordera remembered that additional girls responded than Kaitlyn had planned for breakfast. She asked and noted each girl's breakfast choice. She advised them she was going to make a quick market run, not to let anyone in, and assured them she'd return in half an hour.

She grabbed her keys, then quickly set the alarm ensuring the girls would be safe while she was away.

Twenty minutes later, the security alarm was triggered when one of the girls decided to get a snack. All panic broke out as they scrambled for their clothes and a place to hide. Heart racing, Jenn tried to calm their friends. Meanwhile Kaitlyn, hands shaking, attempted to call the police. Scared an intruder had entered the house, she followed the instructions her parents taught.

The monitoring company called and police arrived just as Mrs. Cordera returned home. She scrambled to disarm the security system. She realized she set the AWAY alarm instead of the STAY.

The situation under control, Kaitlyn felt her carefully planned sleepover was ruined.

That next week, Jenn and the rest of the girls told everyone they knew at school how much fun they had at Kaitlyn's sleepover. They begged her to have another one. Kaitlyn just looked at them.
