Sexuality and Self-Acceptance: The Final Frontier, and the Last Golden Cow to be Destroyed (Part V: Sexuality as Nature, i.e. as the "Enemy of the State")
A still, of Julia, from the 1984 film adaptation of Nineteen Eighty-Four, directed by Michael Radford.
The Government hates a a free and healthy sexuality, because a free and healthy sexuality is a sign of total self-acceptance, which is the ultimate threat to state control. I quote George Orwell from his novel 1984, speaking of Julia, the main female character in the story, a member of INGSOC's "Anti-Sex League."
The girl with dark hair was coming towards them across the field. With what seemed a single movement she tore off her clothes and flung them disdainfully aside. Her body was white and smooth, but it aroused no desire in him, indeed he barely looked at it. What overwhelmed him in that instant was admiration for the gesture with which she had thrown her clothes aside. With its grace and carelessness it seemed to annihilate a whole culture, a whole system of thought, as though Big Brother and the Party and the Thought Police could all be swept into nothingness by a single splendid movement of the arm. That too was a gesture belonging to the ancient time.
Next, Margaret Sanger (founder of Planned Parenthood) on who is "fit," in her opinion, to reproduce sexually:
“the most urgent problem today is how to limit and discourage the over-fertility of the mentally and physically defective.”
-Margaret Sanger, The Eugenic Value of Birth Control Propaganda, 1921
(What follows are my brief notes for the video below. I do hop you enjoy this fifth installment of the series.)
The state is rigid, manipulative, violent control.
Life is fluid, open, and non-violent.
An open and healthy sexuality and the expression thereof is the enemy of the state.
The state hates what it cannot control.
