Making merit at a temple and talking to temple’s cats,
Last weekend was crazily busy for me! I had to try to get some N95 masks for fear of the spread of the new coronavirus in Thailand. Following daily news on this Covid-19 in South Korea, Japan,Iran and Italy everyday; my mind starts to feel very stressful and non-cheerful. The only counter balancing action for me was to make merit by offering some practical necessary items to a respectable monk.
So, I bought some toothbrush, toothpaste, vitamins, masks for anti-household dust and chemical scents, and a bottle of disinfectant, etc. I didn’t have more time to do proper shopping this time, so I just select some items from my storage box and threw in new items I just bought at HomePro mall.
The tradition of making merits or offering things, food and money to monks or the temple has been carried out by Buddhists for thousands of years! (Buddhism is about 2500 years old). The reason for supporting the monks and temples is to make it possibly for them to live and practice Buddhist teachings. Buddhist monks are not allowed to work for money nor act like merchants. They have to rely solely on the support of the community of Buddhist people. In this way, monks are dependent on ordinary people for food, medicine, robes and shelter. So, people will donate more money and give more support to monks who have high reputation of being strict and upright, following all the Buddhist precepts. Monks that have the reputation of being high level meditators will attract many followers and consequently a lot of offerings or gifts. This could be detrimental to the relationships among the monks and followers as some monks become too spoiled by material comfort and lost the meditative mind! On the other hand, followers become too dependent on those monks and become superstitious about all the magical or psychic abilities of these monks! This tends to lead to non-Buddhist beliefs, spiritual attachment and failure in leading a more enlightenment life.
I have met a few monks who have achieved very high level of meditation, but they would never tell others about their achievement. We could observe and tell by the way they carry themselves. These monks seem to be highly psychic and could read our mind including know what would happen in the future. According to Buddhism, there are at least 44 methods or paths for meditation and there are eight major levels or Yanas of meditation achievements. Some followers would put pressure on these monks and seek answers about the future. Really strict monks would go to live in forest monasteries far away from people so that they could proceed towards the path of becoming an Arahat or enlightened monks. This path is very difficult and fraud with obstacles and challenges for the mind will not stop moving even for a second!
I like to make merit as this act of giving will make me think about other person’s well being and make me less obsessed with my own security and make me less selfish-minded. That’s the hidden purpose of the ritual of making merit or Dana. This tradition makes people more compassionate and willing to give assistance to other people.
After making my offering, the monk will chant old Pali texts for transforming this act of Dana (merit making) or energy. So, I have to be mindful while pouring water from a small bottle into a bowl, thinking about dead relatives to whom I would like to send the merits from this ritual. Then,I would take this bowl of water to be poured onto a big tree’s trunk so that Mother Earth could send this merits’ energy to my intended receivers.
As I was walking towards the car park, I met a few temple cats along the way. These cats did look a bit sad and lonely to me as they didn’t have the love abs attention of the owners; they had to fend for themselves. I knew that some staff gave some cats left over food from the kitchen.
This old cat actually talked to me and came up to me for body rub. I had to tell him that I could not take him home with me. But I gave him some Reiki healing energy.
He was complaining about his tough life. So I told him I would remember to bring along some cat food next time.
This cat looked startled at first but she recognised me and started to give me a big smile (yawning)!
So many sick people are suffering badly from this new coronavirus so I would remind myself of my lucky situation and become more contemplative, sending compassionate vibes to all the medical staff who are working very hard at great risk and all those unfortunate people around the world.
I do hope you could be quiet for a minute and send your good intention vibes around the world! Resonants work wonder for it is energy medicine!
Wishing you peace, good health and prosperity.
Cheers.
the cat's smile was not very cheerful....
She was yawning instead of smiling! She has many nice teeth! Hahaha.
I understood that
Your dogs do not yawn or haughty!?

Doctors recommend eating fresh garlic.
The cat that yawns and smiles is beautiful!
Yup! Lots of garlic and vitaminC
That is a nice gentle cat, she lives in the temple! Monks feed her too.
