Hello everyone here in this great platform, Today I am going to share with you all the concepts of Information and Communication Technology, their importance, and their difference from Information technology.

First of all, let's discuss the difference between ICT and IT as people used to take them to be the same. We would commence with Information and Communication Technology.

What is Information and Communication Technology (ICT)?

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) refers to an electronic medium that is used for creating, manipulating, storing, receiving, and transferring information from one computer to the other. It is an easier and faster method of transferring information or messages. It transfers messages or information in a more convenient, accessible, and understandable manner without any interruption.

ICT makes use of the following gadgets in transferring information from one medium to another, they include mobile phones, wireless networks, radio, internet, computers, TV, base stations, Satellites, etc.
After knowing what ICT is, let's now define IT and see how they differ from each other.

What is Information Technology (IT)?

Information Technology is defined as the use or application of computers and other telecommunications tools or equipment in storing, retrieving, transmitting, and manipulating data in businesses or enterprises. I think we can now see the difference between the two when we relate their definitions to each other.

What is Information System (IS)?

Information System refers to the study of complementary hardware and software networks used by individuals and organizations in collecting, filtering, processing, creating, and distributing data. Information System uses the theoretical foundation of Information and Computation to help in the study of algorithmic processes in a computer science discipline and also in the study of various business models. Let's now look at what Computer Information Systems are.

What is Computer Information System (CIS)?

Computer Information System on the other hand refers to the field of studying computers and algorithmic processes, their principles, their applications, their hardware and software designs, and also their importance on the society as well.
We can see that the difference here with that of the Information system is that the Information system concentrates more on functionality than design. We would now look at who an ICT literate is.

What is ICT Literacy?

ICT literacy refers to the term used in describing the use of digital technology, networks, and communication tools in accessing, integrating, managing, evaluating, and creating information so as to be able to work in a technological society.

Importance of Information and Communication Technology on Society

  • ICT has made communication faster between two individuals or organizations.

  • ICT has also decreased the cost of communication fees as compared to the past centuries

  • ICT has improved the way students tackle or solve questions by being innovative and developing new skills

  • ICT has made it easier for students to understand subjects by implementing virtual learning and teaching

  • ICT has created more opportunities for employment

Negative Impacts of ICT on the Society

  • ICT is used by some users for frauding, and hacking others.

  • ICT also has a negative health impact on users when being used frequently for a long time

  • Also, some users used ICT for easy access to watching pornographic materials on the internet.

  • Lastly, the ICT tools or materials are very expensive to get.

I would end my article here and I am very excited to come out with this episode. Watch out for more upcoming episodes about computers in my next article.

Thank You all for your time and attention.
