Sistine Chapel Replica in Mexico City
Miguel Francisco Macias, a retired graphic designer, has spent the last 18 years painting a replica of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel at a church in Mexico City.
His intent was to recreate the masterpiece for those who are unable to visit Europe to see it in person. Macias' work can be found at Perpetuo Socorro Church in Colonia Moctezuma, and was funded by the congregation. After working weekends tirelessly with the help of two assistants, his work expands across 14 canvases, 45-feet wide each.
Macias was inspired by a trip he made to Rome in 1999 after realizing that the dimensions of the Sistine Chapel were similar to those of his church in the city.
When he started the project years ago, he had no idea it would take so long to complete. He had initially projected that it would take six years max. Of course, there were many setbacks including floods, robberies, etc.
What kept him going over the years was his belief that God wanted him to do this.
