It really doesn't take long for skin problems to develop
Left to their own devices, dogs will replicate as often as they possibly can. This is a real problem in Thailand where sterilization seems to be a luxury that is only available to the very rich despite the fact that the procedure doesn't cost very much and at least under the previous King, once a week it was available to anyone in the country for free. Despite this, finding a load of new puppies all over the place is very common.
Even in the areas that we try to cover with our sterilization efforts, we don't get to all of the females fast enough and the population of a pack quickly doubles. With this comes lots of other problems and one of them, skin problems and also parasites, sets in on the newborns very rapidly.
The life of a stray puppy in Thailand seems to work like this: When they are young and cute people will look after them, sometimes even taking them away from their mothers. Then, once they start to grow up and inevitably start to become a bit of a problem with barking and the fact that most dogs at one point or another will start to chew on things they are not "supposed to" the owners will abandon them, normally at a temple or by simply dropping them off in the jungle where they are probably very afraid, confused, and almost certainly end up getting harassed and hurt by the packs that live there already.
They are also very susceptible to parasites and skin problems resulting from them. You can see that these two pups already have some pretty serious skin problems and they are as best we can tell a little over a month old. This situation, left untreated will only get much much worse and in many cases it will result in the slow death of the dog in question.
The problem we face now is that they are too young for us to treat with broad spectrum anti-parasite medicine. I don't pretend to know why this is because I am just an animal lover that works in administration, but according to the veterinarians that serve as advisors in our organization, we have to wait a while.
The only thing we could do to help them now would to be to take them and give them an anti-flea bath, which is what we don on site at the temple they are located at. Thankfully, the monks who live and work there are monitoring them, so we will be able to at least know that they are being looked after to some degree and once they are old enough we will sterilize them as well.
It is a frustrating process at temples and it seems never-ending at points since it is very popular to drop off unwanted pets at temples. This is such a common practice that some temples have signs out front that indicate that they can not take on any more animals but this only deters a certain portion of the population, people still continue to drop them off.
It breaks my heart a little bit to think that anyone could look at that face and decide to discard that little fella, but it happens all the time. We will continue to do our work the best we can to look after them and we need to focus on the "long-game" where hopefully through education and our continued sterilization initiatives, eventually the problem can be alleviated to a certain degree.
Special thanks to all of our donors out there: You have no idea how much it is appreaciated.
