This is the start of a new blog series where the focus is of the various Canadian fiat coins and bills that can be found in the great white north. The hope is to expose people to the various forms of legal tender that are accepted up here in Canada and to have others share what their countries various currencies look like.

"The Fiver"

The lowest currency amount circulated in bill form as well as likely the most common denomination you'll see floating around for change up here in Canada is the $5.00 note.

This version of the Canadian $5.00 bill was released roughly 2013 and features the 7th Canuck prime minister Sir Wilfred Laurier on the face side and the "Canada Arm" and an astronaut on the other. It also features a transparent section which houses a hologram of the Mackenzie Tower on our nations parliament hill. Closer picture of the hologram below!

The bill itself is made up of some sort of plastic which is a bit of an upgrade over the previous paper $5.00 bills in circulation before. So far these appear to last longer than previous versions but time will tell. They do however seem to stick together far worse.

On neat feature is the way they've created these bills the opposing side actually ends up a watermark on the other. An example of this is the astronaut sitting on Sir WIlfred Laurier's shoulder when the bill is looked at with a strong light on the other side as pictured below:

THe hologram shining also pictured below, it's incredibly brilliant given the right light. My appologies for the poor quality pictures.. This was the best one I could seemingly get of the hologram:

I'll try to find some of the older versions of the $5.00 bill for future episodes of this blog series. More than a few variations exist of the Canadain $5.00 bill exist and I'll hopefully be able to get them displayed here in the near future. Stay tuned for more posts!
