Adopted standard HDMI 2.1 with support for 10K resolution and Dynamic HDR
For the first time about the HDMI 2.1 specification, which defines the new version of the popular interface for high-definition digital video transmission and multi-channel audio, the industry non-profit organization HDMI Forum told in January. This week, the HDMI 2.1 specification, which is completely backward compatible with previous versions of the interface, has become available to all manufacturers using the previous version of HDMI 2.0 in their products.
As we already reported earlier, the main innovation was the maximum bandwidth of the interface increased to 48 Gbps. Increasing the bandwidth of the "channel" will allow you to connect monitors and TVs with even greater resolution and refresh rate. By the way, the HDMI 2.1 standard brings support for two new formats - 8K60 and 4K120. It also claims support for Dynamic HDR technology, which provides dynamic variation of brightness, contrast and color settings for each scene on the screen, and resolutions up to 10K (10240x420 pixels) - it is clear that these will be specialized products for commercial use.
In addition, the HDMI 2.1 standard brings the technologies of Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Quick Frame Transport (QFT), which gamers should like. The first, in fact, is an analog of the adaptive frame synchronization technology G-Sync / Freesync, it will provide a dynamic change in the refresh rate of the monitor or TV in accordance with the game's playing frequency. The second is responsible for reducing input delays.
Another standard HDMI 2.1 includes technology Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), which automatically determines the optimal delay time for the most smooth change of frames.
For more convenience and clarity, HDMI Forum published a small image with a comparative table, which allows to assess how large is the current update of HDMI.
The HDMI 2.1 Compliance Test Specification (CTS) specification will be published in parts between the first and third quarter of 2018.
When the first products with HDMI 2.1 support appear on the market, it is still unknown.
