Good day ladies and gentlemen. Today I want us to look at how tears contribute to the health of our eyes.

Tears are very important part of our eye health and thus help to lubricate the surface of our eyes allowing eye lids to move up and down.
The conjunctiva is nourished and protected by tears and also the the outer surface of the eye is protected by tears.

Tears also wash away dirt and other things like bacteria that can cause damage to the eye. So you see, tears are very important. Tears are produced by lacrimal gland on each eye. Whenever we blink our eyes tears spreads on the surface of the eye and does its work according to the condition the eyes find itself.
Tears after performing it's functions immediately drains in to some tiny holes found in the corner of our lower and upper eye lids. Thereafter tears travel through some small holes to a sac where the lids are attached to the side of the nose and then down a duct, the nasolacrimal duct as popularly known as tear duct before emptying into the nose.
In these processes if the pathways are blocked the tears cannot find a clear passage and will become stuck in the eye causing watering of the eye which is referred to as NASOLACRIMAL DUCT OBSTRUCTION.

So nasolcrimal duct obstruction is when one or both tear duct is/are blocked. This eye condition doesn't have any age limit and thus can affect newborns, children or adults.

The nasolacrimal ducts can become blocked for the following reasons; nasal problems, thickening of the tear duct lining and sinus problems.

Is is important to note that if this condition of the tear duct blockage is not treated tears will not drain away from the eye and may lead to a source of infection.

Surgery, eye drops are the common forms of treatment.

I believe that i have provided sufficient information about Nasolacrimal duct Obstruction and you have learnt something about this eye condition. Frequently visit the eye clinic for intensive eye examination to see if your eyes are in good condition.
