Energy From Orbit – China Wants To Build A Space Solar Power Plant

in #science6 years ago

Who wouldn’t like to have cheap, easy to get and clean energy from space? The Chinese certainly want it. They want to have commercial orbital solar power plants by around 2050.

Nowadays we can see solar power plants growing everywhere. But now it seems we will get to see them even in orbit as it seems that Chinese experts are working on creating an orbital solar power plants which would then be capable of farming the Sun’s energy twenty four hours a day, seven days a week with no regard to the weather down on the planet.

If the news is trustworthy, then the first small space solar power planet should launch by the year 2025. Next up we should see a middle sized orbital solar power planet capable of producing one megawatt of energy by 2030. By 2050, they would like to launch an orbital power planet that would produce up to one gigawatt of clean energy. This would be undoubtedly a grandiose project that would put China into the position of the leader of space technology.

But there are still hurdles in the way that we need to overcome. Probably the largest is the fact that we still need to develop a technology capable of bringing the energy gathered down to Earth. On the other hand, if this sci-fi sounding project becomes reality it could be a source of practically inexhaustible clean energy for humanity.
